[#3502869]

We're looking at buying a decent sound system for the house. What we want is something that will play the music in the kitchen, but that has speakers in other rooms so we can turn them on and listen as well while we potter about.

Richer sounds treated us like idiots (and said 'we don't do WiFi stuff), and the internet is baffling the both of us.

A few must haves:
- FM/DAB radio
- ability to play to other speakers throughout the house.
- smartphone compatibility

We thought also a CD player, but there may be better options; we just don't know.

Any thoughts from the audio experts on here?

Most devices won't play music in other rooms without a receiver in those rooms - ala Sonos/squeezebox where the music is largely digital and stored in a central location.

Maybe starting somewhere like this would help Amazon multi-room guide

Also budget can make a big impact on what we are talking about here 🙂

I think Richer Sounds can be a bit like JE James.

Some branches you'll get knowledgable, helpful staff. Some you'll get knowledgable condescending staff. Some you'll get know nowts who still try to be condescending.

could we just get a decent amp, CD player, iThing dock, and then have some wireless speakers somewhere in the house?

What would be the positives and negatives of that approach?

here you go mate

im looking for a method that streams my music over the wifi to my amp and speakers in just one room. squeezebox and sonos will both do that, and multi rooms too. is that anything like what youre after?
as far as cd players go, im gonna try and rip my cds to flac format and just access from my phone/ squeezebox remote etc rather than use a cd player any more.

I recently bought a sonos setup with a Play 3 for the bedroom and a connect amp for the existing speakers in the lounge. I cant reccomend this highly enough, you can play different music in each room from the same music libray or play the same in all rooms. You can connect up to 30 units together in one system which would even work in the biggest of houses. You can access internet radio, set alarms, connect your Tv through it and just about anything you can think of. It is expensive and addictive to connect multiple rooms but well worth the money in my opinion.

I bought a £50 bufalo NAS drive that stores my I tunes folder with all my music on it. It was very easy to configure and I also have another hard drive that backs it up just in case. Because I am using my I tunes folder as the music source I also have another backup of my music files on my Ipod anyway.

I have speakers hard wired in and a switching box. 4 pairs of speakers and any combination can be on at any one time run from and ordinary amp. cost a hundred quid or more in cable tho.

simple is best IMO
