Depends on your margin on those sales.

if you'd been shut, they'd have gone somewhere else, may have enjoyed better value and customer service, and never come back.... 8)

Well I've been in all day and I'm not even customer facing, it is dragging now though - might bin it off and ride home.

If they closed and forced you to take your allocated holidays instead, then you'd have grounds to moan. As it is you can either work or take time off, surely ?

Ton, why so bad today ? (weather, ...) What was yesterday like ?
I thought this was a mega week for sales generally - what do you sell ?

tomhoward - I hope that's not gross margin, otherwise you won't be working there much longer.

You'd be the first to complain is the boss nearly paid you, wouldn't you?
Nearly isn't good enough, is it?

Why does this make your employer miserly? It sounds like they'll be making bugger all, if any, profit.

I'd say they're providing a public service, if they're not really making any money. You should feel good about the part you're playing in this Ton.

STR, yep, thats gross margin, if slightly reduced, normal (and standard for the product) is 2.5%.

Paying me? Thanks to frankly ridiculous target setting, its been a while since ive earn't anything like a reasonable wage! But that's a story for another day..

If that's gross tomhoward, then what's your annual turnover? And importantly what are your overheads? 1% gross isn't a lot to play with to leave a nett profit unless you are turning over big bucks.

was it worth it?

If they market themselves as 'always there' and a constant for trade to get stuff at when they need it, yes.

If you ran that business out of your own home* you'd need to sell over a million pound of product just to give yourself something close to the national average wage.

*assuming you don't use any electricity, gas, phone bills and use the public toilets down the road to save on toilet paper.

Turnover for the company as a whole for this year will be over £400 million, but the bit I (and 5 others) are paid based on is about £20 million (target was 30, a 10% increase on what we did last yr despite the recession...) that 2.5% product is our stack em high, sell em cheap one though. That said our highest margin product (that I'm involved with) is 14% average is about 5%. Of that million gross profit, I'll see about 6k in net commission.

remember, i was only asking a question. if you thought it was a miserly boss who opened through xmas, when there was no profit to be had.

a simple yes of no would have sufficed............ 🙄

Fixed costs apply whether shop is open or closed. (rent, rates, bank interest, your wages etc)

Theres also market share to think about, if they don't buy it from you, they will but it from somewhere else. (as already stated)

although there may not be 'profit' in your eyes the cash is still in your till, not someone elses.

Whats the takings normally over the working months as thats what
you normally measure the takings.

If you was in business and relied upon week to week takings
don't think you'll find anyone in business.

Thats why I measure takings by month by month
as you would see a different value for staying open.

Don't see the issue...they were 'kind' enough to have the heating on and all the electrical kit that you need...if they were miserly, they'd insist you work with no heating...so not miserly in my book...
