On my last Personal Tax Return, my accountant worked out the tax due and notified me. I questioned whether or not it should be more due to my student loan payments. I explained they're normally based on my taxable income above ~£15,000 and get paid in January along with my personal tax. He emailed back saying he'd checked and I didn't need to pay anything.

I've now got a letter from HMRC saying that I do in fact owe some student loan repayments. Not a massive deal, but it's £1500 I hadn't budgeted on having to pay out. Where do I stand as far as having received shite advice from my accountant (not actually my accountant per se, but my company accountant's business partner). Claim back any fees as a starting point?

Similar happened to my fiance, her boss hadn't informed HMRC despite telling her that he had.
End result is she's still got to pay it off, via direct debit over 2years.
