Is this at an optician or an eye clinic?

Opticians-large high street. Routine eye test. History of high ish pressures. Often slightly raised 25 ish before the exam and then 22/23 on retest after.

Not for a routine test. Fields tests are only if they suspect you have glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy

First time I had that test, many years ago, I was told that if I failed it no more driving. It certainly put the pressure on to hit those dots!
Last Sunday, due to cataract, I've been banned from driving until it's removed. No problem with that accept it's a four month waiting list. Appointment on Tuesday to see consultant to go private, hopefully may be a bit quicker.

If you’re near Sheffield I can heartily recommend Eyeye Opticians. Levels of care I’ve never seen (lol) in many years of spectacle wearing.

What did you pay for within your eye test? Seems strange that they'd not do it if it's a regular result. Is this the same optician you've used in the past?

OK, I've never had a field test at the optician, but at the first hint of elevated pressures I was packed off to the eye clinic for detailed testing. I think you should have the same.  High pressures are commonly a sign of glaucoma which needs treatment but could be (as in my case) thickened cornea which fool the pressure measurements into giving higher results than the actual pressures. My thickened cornea apparently increase the pressures by around 6. I doubt your optician would have the equipment to measure your cornea and indeed I was on drops for glaucoma for many years before that equipment was developed and the actual cause discovered.

That said although I'm no longer considered to have glaucoma I still have annual visits to the eye clinic for a whole raft of tests just to make sure everything is still OK.

So was I  - with similar readings. If nothing else, the 'stingy eye drop' needle test they give you at hospital is more accurate than the air-puff test, so could set your mind at rest. Opthalmology dpt always gives me a spot the dots test. I am very competitive with it.

They told me 23 was a threshold level, did you get packed off for that?

A cautionary tale to go with slowoldman’s above: I have thickened corneas, cupped optic nerves for as long as they’ve been photographing my retinas, and also have some damage in my dominant eye from pigmentary dispersion syndrome glaucoma which came on in my 30s. If it’s something you’re already worried about going back in for a visual field test is definitely a worthwhile request.

You can have high pressures as your normal. Cupped discs much more important so with retinal photography and OCT retina scans the optician may not need a fields test. If you have fields every time it may just be to justify a very expensive eye test, or something the optician does to look fancy. Saying that, if you’re worried, go and ask them.
