A friend of mine from Germany is looking to open up a sterling savings account in the UK. He is not resident in the UK - does anyone know if this can this be done without having access to a UK address / Can they recommend a good account for someone in his position ?

I'd always assume you'd approach some international bank like HSBC in Germany and talk to them about opening a UK account. If the adverts are anything to go by, that is.

HSBC is totally inept at that stuff in practice.

May be easier to do it with banks in Jersey, IoM etc, purely because they're more used to opening accounts for non-residents than high street numpties.

http://www.res-non-dom.barclays.com/ for example.

Avoid RBS - total numpties.

thanks for that KonaBunny, but for Barclays you need to put in at least £24k per year, he's looking to put in somewhat less than that.

Any more suggestions ?
