I'm a little surprised at this but tescos finest lightly salted sea salt crisps are (when they're good) bloody amazing. They've got that "sea front chip shop" thing going on with the oil, they're very crunchy without being jagged and deadly, it's just a really good crisp. Wee bit erratic, not every pack tastes the same but at £1.50 for the big bag I'll forgive them that.
But are we getting a bit focused here? There's snacks and there's snacks. I don't think anything crispy or savoury or whatever can match the allround excellent snackyness of a bit of shortbread. I mean it's just butter and sugar in a convenient payload delivery system, what could be finer?
I love a bit of shortbread but not all shortbread is created equally. During lockdown I sampled pretty much all the varieties you can buy, not intentionally at first but it soon became a bit of a mission.
Walkers is the benchmark for me. Not too sugary, quite dense and not to crumbly and a bit heavy on the butter. Spar's shortbread is the best of the own-brands, very close to Walkers to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if Walkers made it for them. Pattersons are bottom tier, along with any that has sugar dusted on top as they tends to be less buttery and too crumbly. Deans are mid tier, nice enough flavour but lacks the density of Walkers. I've actually been to their factory as it's not too far away from me (prior to any lockdown "market research").
As much as I love shortbread, I do prefer a crushed digestive based caramel slice to millionaires shortbread as the shortbread base that most places use is often dry, tasteless, crumbly and the base to caramel and chocolate ratio is usually way off (too much base, not enough of the other 2). A good caramel slice usually has equally proportioned layers.
I'd take a peppermint slice or Maltesers Tiffin over most other cake type snacks though, or some kind of limoncello cake. Morrisons do an amazing one...
I have to go with you on Shortbread, though i prefer the more buttery, so it isnt too crumbly, leaving crumbs all down your clothes or worse floating in the coffee. Yes it is also the ultimate of dunkers.
Sometimes even the cheaper brands from asda, tesco or even the unheard of corner shop brands have a high rating, though im not sure its actual butter in them
or some kind of limoncello cake
Morrisons also sell a lemon sponge -Lu Le Petit Citron Lemon Flavoured Soft Bakes. Individually foil wrapped. Very nice, though kind of stodgy
