there were undated coins which were valuable (rare)

then people started selling normal coins (and people bought them!)

but yes there is one born every minute!!

I've got 2 20ps here, with only dates on the back. Are they worth 99p as well?

I know someone who had one with no date and got over £400 for it. Mine however all have the date on one side and are worth exactly 20p!

I've got one of the completely undated ones they made by accident... I've heard they're worth about £50 but I've never gotten round to finding out...

I've got a cousin with a big entrepeneurial streak. A few years back, the Bank of Scotland brought out a series of golf-related £5 notes. My cousin went round the banks buying up as many of them as possible (at face-value of course) then put them in frames and sold them to Americans for £25 on ebay!
