I looked at the update thread you put up two years ago and saw the FB photo's - what a guy J must be, good on him. Absolutely no doubt that with spirit like that he'll give this cancer a big kick in the balls.

I have to admit to having a bit of a wobble at the moment but I am sure J (and the surgeon) can do the necessary to kick some tumourous butt and get him fit and well again.
I feel kinda selfish to be honest - I am not the one going into theatre tomorrow - but he's going to get a nice few hours out cold tomorrow and I am already in a state about it... Thank goodness for annoying litle sisters!

A lot of people send me emails from all around the world, asking me about my fight with sarcoma, and about who or what inspires me. Funnily enough, the last person was a reporter a couple of Saturdays ago. My answer always starts with the line;

[i]"...there's this guy with one arm called Julian in Sheffield..."[/i]

He's one of the reasons I'll never, [b]ever[/b] give up. I owe him everything.

Godspeed you two; no backing down, no matter what. I love you both x

Metalheart - we did Whinlatter red in May, if that helps at all? He was better at it than I was. It's quite embarrasing!

Just had a good long chat with Bullheart and we have decided J is going to be fine and kick some sarcoma arse. We have the best cardiothoracic surgeon on side, a great oncologist and the good vibes of hundreds of friends - you're all ace and we appreciate your support more than you can possibly imagine.

And that good update will be coming soon - keep watching!

TN, yes I have had the embarrassment of being passed on an uphill by a man with one arm... I think I posted this on your original thread?

A red run is plenty good enough for me. I'll look forward to that thread in due course. 😀

TN Don't feel selfish - you have to acknowledge your fears and needs as well. sometimes being the supportive one is hard - but it helps to share that load as much as you can. I thank you for sharing and I hope we can in little ways help you.

Hi all.

Well, what a long day - almost 7 hours from taking him to theatre to him arriving back in ICU. The good vibes did the job though and apparently there were no dramas and the surgeon did what he intended to do. I don't know whether they got the whole tumour out - not spoken to anyone on the surgical team yet - but I am assuming they did as they took some of his diaphragm away and patched it with Goretex - that's dedication to the gear freak cause, isn't it??
He's in ICU at the moment but all his numbers look good (he looked shit, but he has had a pretty rough day, so I will let him off) and they took the breathing tube out as soon as he got settled, which is apparently pretty good. They expect him to go back to the general ward tomorrow, all being well.
So, thank you all for your continuing support, especially yesterday evening when I was really struggling.

Oh aye, I sure do Bunnyhop.
However, hospital has just rung and said he's off back into theatre because he's bleeding into the chest drain, but they said it is fairly common after cardio/thoracic surgery and didn't seem overly concerned. J asked them to ring and let me know because I think he knew the earache if they didn't would be far, far worse. 😉 Apparently he was okay in himself and his stats were looking good, so I guess it's (kind of) like knocking a scab off your knee really...
So anyway, I am up for the next couple of hours waiting to check he is okay again.

They went back in and didn't find anything specific bleeding, so they just cleaned it all out and fastened him back up. His blood isn't great after the chemo - it's good 'for him', but compared to a healthy person it's kind of watery.

So, after Thursday nights little drama, he has gone from strength to strength and has had all the wires and pipes removed, apart from the chest drain. It is still draining more than the surgeon would like but he's not too concerned and says it just needs some time and is probably just a 'hangover' from the 5 months of chemo.
He's now eating well (he requested takeaway onion bhajis for tea and had a huge salad for his lunch) and is walking about pretty well. Various friends and family have visited and all have said he looks great and not at all like a man who had major surgery less than 3 days ago.
I think the consensus is that he's nails. 🙂 I am not going to disagree with that.

My GF finished 24 weeks of chemo just 6 weeks ago and has only just cleared all the fluid off her lungs, abdomen and legs. She's looking so much healthier now. You are in our thoughts.

Hi. Sorry for disappearing for a few days - been kind of busy.
He was allowed home on Wednesday last week with 36 staples and a chest drain. He's had the staples out now and the wound is healing nicely, but the drain is still in.
He says he feels like he was kicked by a horse. (he even joked that he wasn't sure about the theatre but the play can't've been much cop as he slept through it AND the encore. ho ho!)
But, living up to his 'nails' reputation, we went for a steady walk up to the local library on Saturday morning and he did great - only a 15 minute walk, but it is slightly uphill all the way and he was less out of breath than before the op, which strikes me as a good thing. He said he felt better for using his legs!

Seeing the surgeon tomorrow for the 'debrief' - could be a bit scary, but he has already said that (as far as he can say, knowing what cancer is like) he got it all out. Just a case of hoping the 5 months of chemo blatted any floating cancer cells.
He is bored now. He can't drive for 6 weeks, he hates relying on others to get out and about. He can't lift anything heavier than a kettle of water for 6 weeks (so he can still make me a cuppa!)
He wants to get on his bike but can't put his riding arm on for a while anyway, as the strapping goes right over the area where his operation site is. So it's turbo only for a while. He *does* have a green light for exercise when he feels like it, but no real cycling for at least 6 weeks.
So, getting there - a minor setback, but we all know how persistent he is. 🙂

Back from seeing surgeon - he's (as) happy (as he can be) he got all the tumour out and the extra bits he took out that looked a bit dubious have come back all clear from pathology. The chemo had done a job on the main tumour too, so the news is as good as it can be. That's officially good news.

From J's point of view, the best bit is that his chest drain came out today too. And that means, once that wound has healed up, he can have a long awaited soak in the bath. 🙂

Close surveillance at Weston park again now, but we can deal with that.

Just need to get the muscles healed up so he can get back onto his bike comfortably/safely.

So, onwards and upwards. Again.
