My first dog(literally!)took me from 2 1/2 years old to 20.
I was mortified when she went. The younger collie passed within a month through pining.
I'm 31 with a 4 1/2 year old collie. Its already been mentioned that i will be a mess when he goes-after a close call with a vectra threatend to bring closer than i'd feared.
He's here now, they can can tell. My heart goes out to you.
Your either a dog person or your not, but comapassion is human nature.
SFB......take a pill and be decent. No need.
You would expect the same resect for a member of your family. Don't think for a second Bert is any less.
Our wishes are with you guys.
Bertcam? Classic..
SFB - dont be a dick, no need.
Bertcam is genius. All the best folks, I'm sure the memories are happy ones.
Talking to a lady in the park last night, she has two Terriers. I asked her how old they are (as you do)- shocked for her to say 7 and 8. BOTH have Diabetes.
A fair few I've met have dogs who became diabetic at this age or sometimes younger. Is it a Manchester-thing? Don't these people look after their dogs with tough-love?!
Back on topic, I remember thinking whilst talking to her and heres this dog Bert who hit 18.
my great uncle Fred was almost totally blind, during a visit to my Gran's he asked if he could take her 2 Jack Russells for a walk.
(these 2 dogs were bad tempered farm dogs, untrained and excellent rabit-ers - nothing would stop them chasing a scent to the bitter end)
'don't be daft' said gran - 'you can't see'
but Fred insisted, and off he went, just him and the dogs.
the bloody things walked with him off the lead and didn't leave his side, guiding him round the farm for about 2 hours. They'd never done anything like that before, or again, they didn't know Uncle Fred, but they knew they had to take care of him. Amazing.
RIP Bert.
Hope you feel like getting him into this thread;

Interesting.
SFB and Jack Russels. Neither is capable of leaving things alone.
So alike!
I guess that's why we like them both so much.
SFB is marginally hairier than any pooch though. Hes like ****in guerilla that fella.
I have not chosen to intrude on Matt's private grief, and my remarks were solely addressed to the mawkish selective anthropomorphic sentimentalilty expressed by other posters
"Everyone show their respects to bert!"
"I lost my 14 year old springer last saturday, possibly the worse feeling ever. "I appear to have stumbled into an alternate universe...
Hope Bert is digging and running with Cassie and Toby who both went to chase deer last year.
I wonder what Richard Dawkin's dog believes in ?
are we to suppose that other animals go to heaven too ? Shall it be heaving with dinosaurs and ferrets etc?
Shut it you big hairybear
Nothing wrong with ferrets Simon.
While it's fun to pick holes in peoples views on religion/heaven/the afterlife, I don't think now is the time to do it.
Nothing wrong with ferrets Simon.
I never said there was, or dinosaurs.
I don't think now is the time to do it.
This isn't a matter of fun, but if critical faculties are to be abandoned every time an animal (or person) dies then there never will be a time
Sorry to hear about Bert. Such a beautiful little chap, and no doubt an amazing friend.
May he rest in peace (interrupted only by some barking at pigeons).
Shall it be heaving with dinosaurs and ferrets etc?
When I die and go to Heaven - I'm saddling a dinosaur and riding it around. He will be called Rexy McRex and be the baddest mofo dino there.
I think I will get him a unicorn horn to go on his head and train him to use it to spike things and then he can cook them with his flaming breath (like a dragon) and toss them backwards for me to eat. Whole chickens and stuff cooked to perfection. I think I will get him lasers and stuff as well.
Infact he will look like this dude. But with flames and a horn.
Simon,
Your contribution to this forum in the main, while frequently irritating and frustrating is something we generally consider to add to the overall 'flavour' of the forum. However, you've picked the wrong thread to start posting to. So, because we can and because right now most of us here really don't want to have you contribute any more to this thread I'm suspending your account for 2 days.
From a personal pov.. Sod off!
This isn't a matter of fun, but if critical faculties are to be abandoned every time an animal (or person) dies then there never will be a time
i think you need to factor in a little respect for the feelings of others at a time thats difficult for them.
its a amzing that a 50 year old doesn't know this but hey ho
RIP Bert, the hunt is over
RIP Bert, he looked like an awesome little dude.
Mark - 100% agree with your post.
SFB can be mildly entertaining as well as being extremely irritating, but to try and wind people up on this post, well that makes him a prime c*ck. What a bell end.
RIP Bert.
RIP Bert! Sniff ๐ฅ
Good call Mark. This is about Bert, not SFB
I always smiled at pictures of Bert after rides, or in the mag office. ๐
I appear to have stumbled into an alternate universe...
Shame it isn't one where you're not a cock.
What a cracking little dog he was. I loved Bertcam!
I've posted this before, but again, for all of us who have lost a friend:
RainbowsBridge.com
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Karinofnine - Superb. Totally superb.
Good call Mark.
Sorry SFB, you gotta learn to respect people's feelings regardless of what else you think about them.
My heart felt condolences go out to Matt, and all at ST towers. I don't know what it is about Jack Russells but their character always seems way bigger then their actual size.
I have lasting memories of waiting patiently on top of a rabbit warren in the middle of the New Forest, listening to muffled growling and barking from deep underground, as our Jack Russell set the bunnies straight on squatters rights in his back yard.
Good memories...
What are you going to get next? Irish Wolf hound?
my sympathies.
having to put Taz down (7) was one of the hardest times of my life. significantly harder than the loss of friends/family even those at a young age and/or in unexpected circumstances, when its your dog you know nobody else really gets it whereas grief for human loss always seems more shared.
RIP Bert, sad news when you loose a good friend....mine turned 11 at the weekend gave her an extra hug after reading this
Well I suppose one good thing has come of this thread, Burt may of gone to 'a better place', but some big mouth has been put in his.
Don't mess with the owners of the site, it's theirs to do with as they please, & to think I actually thought you were intelligent, stupid boy!
RIP Bert.
The more people I meet, the more I like dogs...
On a related note, I now have an urge to strap my headcam to one of our greyhounds.....
RIP Bert, glad he made it to such a grand age and that the end was quick for him. JRTs are proper old soldier dogs who never give up.
Bertcam is inspired, my petcam (still) revealed only this

Oh and about 100 shots of grass/dirt/pavement.
Must try again soon.
Oh and about 100 shots of grass/dirt/pavement.
.....and other dogs @rses...
I would like to add my commiserations for Matt and all who knew Bert.
I for one just want to express my humble and personal view that I find dogs deeply spiritual beings who are very protective, and it is no wonder that so many owners find the loss of such a friend can be difficult, so hugs from me.
Sorry to hear your sad news Matt - RIP Bert.
I'll be honest and say I've avoided reading this thread for a few days because I lost my own beloved Bert (16yr old big, chunky half Yorkshire Terrier, half Wookiee) back in March. Was totally devastated because she (yes, she - far more tomboy than lady) was my sidekick through everything, and such a colourful character. Everyone knew her.
All I can say is it does get "easier" as the days and weeks roll on. And remember the good times - there'll be plenty
One more thing (I only say this because it helped us a lot) - I opted to drop Bert off myself (to the crem) so as to say goodbye one-to-one. As unusual as it may sound, I even "attended" the chapel for a 10 minute service - it just felt like the right thing to do.
Bert has since returned home and is again part of the family.
RIP Bert and Bert
SM
Regards to Bert. He looks very happy on the photo, a nice memory of him. Its awful beyond words to loose pets. My sympathy to the Singletrack gang.
So sad to see Bert go. Met him a couple of times at MM/SITS etc and a real character.
Remember the good times.
Matt, and the STW crew,
sorry to learn that Bert's lifting his leg on the Pearly Gatepost.
That's sad news indeed, but after reading your reasoning I can fully appreciate your position.
May your sorrow ease swiftly.

I'm still not quite sure why SBF has such a problem with WTF I wrote.
I wasn't expecting sympathy, was mearly expressing that I knew how the OP was feeling about the loss of his dog.
Having had my dog for 14 years, we brought her up from being small enough to sit in the palm of my hand, I then had to watch as she was put to asleep. It was possibly the hardest thing I've had to do.
In the end, it was me that had to make the decision, although something that I'd known was coming for while was bloody hard to do.
As a child I was always taught that if I had nothing constructive to say, I should keep quiet. On this occasion the same applies to SBF. I didn't ask for him to comment on what I'd wrote and really should have expected someone to take the piss. Hopefully he'll never lose anything that's close to him.
lets not dwell on SFB eh? I think he has been given a wrap over the knuckles here. This whole thread is about showing empathy and support for Matt, after having made such a hard choice. Never easy, guilt inducing stuff, but ultimately the right thing to do for obviously a much loved part of the family.
Dogs are the best pals, and losing one in ay situation is horrible.
Hope you feel better soon Matt et al.
RIP bert, looks a cute little fella. Always liked to read his line on the editorial section bit thing "where would you like to be stranded due to the ash cloud" etc...
I hope there will be a suitable Bert related outro in the next mag.
I think he has been given a wrap over the knuckles here
more like being sent to the naughty corner...
It's lovely Bert outro in Issue 58. Brought a tear to my eye.
