I've never been a fan of frying with olive oil.

You can't fry with olive oil (well, you can, but it's crap) - it breaks down at high temperatures.

Rapeseed oil, you say? Is that fry-friendly?

Supposedly. I roasted potatoes in it yesterday and they were great.

You might be a moderator, but you're wrong. How do you make a Spanish omelette without frying the potatoes till soft in (Spanish) olive oil?

Goose fat is essential for roast potatoes.

Been using Grape seed oil for hot things for years, has virtually no taste - olive oil for cold/warm stuff.

rapeseed oil is fantastic for making wedges. A little goes a long way and it's fine nice and hot.

Oils are just like vinegars, herbs & spices etc....have to have a good selection so you have the right one for the job.

Refined olive oil is as good for frying as pretty much anything else, its smoke point is in the same region, however it is more expensive in this country than as good alternatives so it seems a bit silly to use it.

Like others I have found supermarket extra virgin oil as good as the local delis/farmer market and indeed the stuff my sister brings back from Tuscany.

I use Olive Oil for most salad dressings except for mayonnaise as it is too overpowering.

We buy generic Tesco virgin olive oil. Personally I'd rather spend the difference between that and poncey olive oil, on beer.

Grapeseed for frying, or butter; butter is nice, I like butter.

Butter also has lots of saturated fat which is essential for your hormone production. Get decent grass fed butter and the essential omega whatsits are in balance too, so you don't suffer an imbalance of hippy karma.

We started using rapeseed oil instead of olive a while ago then found out your bog standard veg oil is actually 100% rapeseed so have gone full circle and just use that now. Is it any different from the poncy more expensive stuff?

Difference is, Kevevs was obviously just having a laugh with his toilet seat thread, whereas this pretentious nonsense actually does seem serious. Olive oil, seriously? Just go and buy the most expensive you can find, then you can feel reassured that you've 'made it' in life.

Alternatively, just buy a fancy looking bottle, pour some cheap stuff into it, stuff a few twigs, bits of bark and some insects in as well, and tell your guests that it's a very rare hand-pressed oil from a tiny grove in Tuscany; they'll never know the difference, and be suitably impressed with how sophisticated, worldly and erudite you are.

Reminds me of Muswellites prattling on about hummus. Utter bollocks.

Any extra virgin oil is good - I use the supermkt own brand stuff here in Spain, 3e a litre. In fact, I haven't used spreads or butter for ages now as I copy the Spanish & just drizzle olive oil on everything.

Blood test results have been good too - lots of good cholesterol & not much bad, so well pleased.

Glass of red wine every day too.

Difference is...blah blah blah
Blah.
Blah.

...Utter bollocks.

So, when you try once and get no reaction, you try again, just this time being more provocative? And there you were wondering the other day why so many threads you'd become involved in [s]since signing back up with a new log-in[/s] had been closed. Why is it you just seem to want to argue all the time?

If Kevevs was having a laugh, he could have just stuck a ๐Ÿ™‚ after it just to allay any doubts.

it sounds to me like talking about olive oil is beneath him, making him more pretentious than the (frankly unpretentious) OP he is deriding.

Deadlydarcy; don't you have anything more constructive to do with your life?

Opinion: Everyone has one. It's what other people have. It may differ to yours. Deal with it.

What's your opinion of expensive olive oil then?

Clearly you're getting a bit wound up today fella. Maybe take some time away from the forum. Get some fresh air.

I recommended rapeseed oil. But possibly you were too busy trolling the thread to read the posts. I mean, I dunno, it's not like you do much of that is it?

Says someone who's only contribution today seems deliberately aimed at getting a rise out of someone. ๐Ÿ˜†

That other stuff was last week. Forget it and move on mate. I have.

This seems to becoming very popular with UK farmers, as I understand there is a significant subsidy for growing such crop. Will this have a negative impact on other crops though, as farmers ditch them in favour of more profitability?

several threads

Two = a couple, maybe a few at a stretch. Frankly you're asking for it.

Enough already? Yeah, before we get a ban for argumentativeness I suppose.

To be honest, I have no idea about the subsidies for oilseed rape. A recipe I tried recommended it and as I'm often not keen on the taste of olive oil, I gave it a shot and really like it. I would have thought it was better to support a subsidised British crop than a subsidised Spanish/Greek/Italian crop or use groundnut oil, but I haven't looked into it in too much detail.

Tonight back at my house.

OH: "Hello dear. How was your day?"

Me: "Oh just the usual dear; there was a fight at lunchtime on STW over olive oil".

OH: "That's nice dear".

But that was 3 years ago when prices were high.

I confess I know bugger all about the farming industry, save what I've gleaned in conversations with friends of friends etc. And isn't biofuel the new thing, or is that the same product? Should we be concerned about the impact radically changing crop types may have on local ecosystems?

I would have thought it was better to support a subsidised British crop than a subsidised Spanish/Greek/Italian crop

But what if the ecological impact of the former was more negative than the latter? Surely better to go with the more ecologically sound product, no?

I buy Greek olive oil myself as I prefer it to Italian stuff, Minerva usually from the Greek deli. Was it on here where I read about the price of proper Balsamic Vinegar being in the hundreds of pounds for a little bottle? Anyway bit of that and olive oil on Daktyla with some grilled Halloumi and all's well with the world.
