Accidentally caught the original Reeves superman yesterday and the special effects, which were epic, are, well...they've not aged well.
Then I read this article about the use of body doubles in "special effects" specifically Matt Damon's body double. I just thought it was good (now I understand that I this might be some deep seated societal sexism/heightism) but the use of stunt doubles to exaggerate height etc feels better than ai. Would they have used Martin Bayfield or ai?
Anyway the image in the gym of her and the "giant" is pretty cool to.
my least favourite thing when one of these big SFX movies (see also Top Gun) comes out is all my pals going on about how $DIRECTOR is a true genius because 'they used no CGI, not like those marvel films'. I used to try and correct them but now i just silently feel sorry for the 100's of VFX artists who apart from hardly being paid, now dont even get recognised. Bonus points for behinds the scences bits when they've used CGI to remove the green screens to maintain the 'no CGI' lie 🤣
The 1997 version used muppets. Its on YouTube and some say far superior to the new one.
But the book is even better :-). Might dig out my old copy and read again.
I watched the original Superman as well, probably the first time since I was a kid. I was amazed at how sexy the whole thing was - much more than modern incarnations.
