[#9300403]

see my post on bb issues for more details but I think I've narrowed the problem down to this named programme uploading lots of data to apple and using up my bandwidth.

it seems to be (from googling) a programme thats syncing/ uploading iCloud data perhaps. it ties in with the timing of my poor connection and the purchase of a Mac/ setting up iCloud.

has anyone experienced this before, theres lots on the internet about it.

when I force quit this item through activity mgr the internet works fine. it kicks off again on its own shortly after and the problem re-occurs.

any ideas?

Probably.

If you think its iCloud related have a look at how you've got iCloud set up - if syncing is using a lot of data is is it because theres something you do that create a lot of large files and those are getting synced (iTunes downloading lots of podcasts, taking lots of photos etc?).

You can choose what apps are syncing to iCloud - so try switching of those iCloud connections one at a time.

Would it be something like Time Machine using your iCloud as a destination for backups?

Just uploaded lots of photos to the mac from my hard drive and I guess they're syncing to iCloud.

I realise now I can turn iCloud off but the reason I got a mac was so that I could sync everything and share across devices.

Once things have settled down and things have uploaded (photos etc) will it settle down I wonde?

Time will tell ๐Ÿ™‚

It might be helpful to give it plenty of time to get that syncing and uploading done - maybe switch off energy saving / sleep for a night or two to give an uninterrupted run to get all the new material uploaded.

You're asking iCloud to upload and sync your files. That's what it's doing. It sounds as though the bottleneck is your data upload speed. Have you ran a Speedtest?

I had the same - uploading photos or backups of devices would bring my ADSL connection to its knees.

The problem is the upload speed on ADSL is normally very poor. In my case it was 448kbit - compared to 6Mbit download. If the upload is swamped, requests for data / web pages etc. get lost/delayed going out and you see it as really poor response times or pages failing to load.

There are a few things I did that helped:
- Depending on your router, you may be able to to QoS settings. Set the iCloud stuff to really low priority.
- Increase upload speed. I was able to get some flag set on my ADSL that took 448 up to 800kbit (8-something, can't remember). That helped - or made the time spent uploading shorter anyway. If you can get fibre, this should all disappear as your connection shouldn't be the bottle neck.
- For photos, you can pause upload, then enable again when you go to bed.
- For device backups, set them to airplane mode before plugging in if you're wanting to use the internet and that'll stop them backing up.

It's a pain - but the core problem is that suddenly we want to send GBs of data onto the internet whereas ADSL assumes that the huge majority of your traffic will be download.
