So hundreds of hours of wear over 5 years and 250 or so washes? Hmm.

Pretty much, is that not what jeans are all about?

I only wish mine were. Maybe my washing machine is uncommonly brutal.

makecoldplayhistory » I'd often wondered. Both about the not washing as much as the price in the first place.

Isn't there a similar theory about armpits?

My cousin owns a company making expensive jeans. Offered me a pair at cost price. £130!!!

I skim read this post and come away with the impression that armpits could be had for £130 a pair.

Bargain...!

Perhaps not, but therein lies the issue. Jeremy Clarkson doesn't realise he looks like Jeremy Clarkson.

Bruce Springsteen. Your argument is invalid.

40+, you get to wear what you want. It's only kids that have to be dicks about clothes.

So if you're only a month into 'wearing in' a pair of fancy pants selvedge jeans or what ever they're called, and you went out for a couple of craft beers and someone bumped into to you at the bar and half a pint of la de dars beardy beard & co's finest porter goes down your leg. Do they get wahsed or are they designed for this in some sort of Marty McFly's self drying jacket sort of way??

As stated yesterday, I moved into old man jeans this Christmas from M&S, with stretch. Old man jeans?

Simultaneously I rediscovered Rohan, so am sat here today sporting some Fusions.

The move away from jeans started here. Aged 42.

That's me out then, although I have now worn the jeans for 6 days without washing them.

Sometimes I worry if I simply follow you around on STW and stroke your ego, but you've nailed it again.

Matt

You haven't discovered "maternity" jeans then?

The only wash of any significance is the first wash. Wearing the jeans for some time before the first wash causes the dye to fade in a way that highlights the creases etc. If the denim is washed while it's still relatively new the dye will fade uniformly

The whole point of not washing them is so that the indigo fades more on the places that you want distinct fading (the places where the fabric naturally creases, pockets etc).

If you are not bothered about the jeans showing wear in this way and want the jeans just to fade all over then regular washes are fine.

So sitting in a warehouse and a shop for months doesn't prevent this but waiting a week or so after you bought them does?

I am not sure this is right as I have found the more you wear a pair of jeans between subsequent washes the more pronounced the fading is. But the first wash is definitely the only one I would bother delaying if you want "wicked fades" or whatever ****y name they have given it.

Once people start putting their jeans in the freezer then they have too much time on their hands....in my opinion of course.

Well as someone that is 42 and wears casual clothes all the time, what am I meant to wear if jeans are banned? Cords or chinos?

I'll add all of the dirty bastards to my list of dirty bastards.

I'm 48 and share my casual trouser time pretty much evenly between jeans, moleskins and Endura Humvees. All of which get washed.

Not washing them means that when you do (for raw/selvedge) you get better fades.

This, it's all about the epic fadez.

I bought a new pair of jeans in June or July. Other than when it was warm enough for shorts, they're the only trousers I've work, work and home, seven days a week, 13 or 14 hours a day. Including cycling to/from work.

I washed them for the first time over the Christmas break when they were about 6 months old.

Bugger. From the horses' mouth.

"Only if it's raw Selvedge denim then wash them cold inside out about once every 6 month"

Not saying they're right, but they do know their stuff...

I have some Hiut denim upstairs which I've never washed, had them over two years.

Those fades are going to look orsum if I ever do get round to running them through the machine.

Depending on the dye etc. some will continue to fade over several washes, making them far lighter as the (I think?) weft comes through.

Can I recommend Persil?

What is so delicate about expensive jeans? I buy cheap ones and they last ok. Not as good as expensive work rang jeans but ok. Are designer jeans made of rubbish material?

Got that the wrong way round; it's because of the heavier material and better dyes used that means washing isn't required so often, especially if natural indigo dye is used, as it has a naturally strong odour which lasts a long time, so if the jeans are worn for purely social purposes, washing shouldn't be required that often.
Of course, getting sweaty, and wearing jeans commando might require more frequent washing!
Natural indigo appears to have antifungal and antibacterial qualities as well, so not washing jeans that have been dyed with natural indigo for extended periods would extend that quality, and other than actual grime, wouldn't be necessary anyway.
Most denim uses synthetic dye, so more frequent washing would probably be required.

This thread is quite worrying, apart from the not washing thing, which is quite trivial really, it seems that, given the STW demographic, many of you seem to be unaware that people over the age of forty should not wear jeans!

Ah, another Daily Mail feature writer who seems to have the same snobbish attitude as tjagain. 🙄

Would all you self confessed scrubbers practice your filthy habit if your trews were white?

They'd be slick with man fat, sweat and seepage within days.

And next time the hipster nephew in law comes round, he can sit on a newspaper.
That sofa was expensive.

Quite apart from any hygiene concerns indigo dye rubs off on other fabrics so that's a good idea if your sofa's light coloured.

Hah! This following the post you wrote!

Seems to be a bit of a split here, with those who don't care what others think and those who care very much about what jeans, what colour, how to care for them and how to get them to fade properly

Filthy sods. Don't these unwashed jeans look dirty for goodness sake?
What about greasy fingers, sweaty, chocolate, tyre grime, just general muck. You can see this on jeans after a few days. Also the more you wash, the softer it gets.
