There isn't much (any) stretch in the summit series so factor that in when considering sizes (ie how many layers you will have on underneath)

£150 for a pub coat, have you won the lottery ?

I'd say max £60-70 for something decent, Berghaus seems to cost as much as North these days.

I have a great North Face waterproof I bought for hiking for £100-ish. For the pub I have a Barbour, it's 30 yrs old and still going strong, the older and sh1ttier it looks the more authentic it is.

Tied in the middle with baler twine is the best look, imo. 😀

Ditto old NF Gore-tex jacket - mine is still going strong after ten years or so. If it makes me look like a chav, so be it. I dinnae give a fug.

In the last couple of years, berghaus quality has fallen off a cliff. I've had items unstitching themselves. Of the two, TNF is far higher quality despite not being as good as it was. I have a 11 year old nuptse jacket. Nowt wrong with it.
If you can afford it, go for arcteryx. Not much compares but it ain't cheap.
Thinking ill be buying a fjallraven next up though.

Blimey hasn't stuff got expensive, a new Barbour is £200 ! @noteeth, as much as I agree with you I'd quite rightly be laughed off the streets of Surrey for that.

FYI My North Face is a Hyvent (cheaper than Gortex), has a great hood and long enough to keep my fat @rse dry

EDIT: I have had good experience with Mountain Warehouse kit too as above.

+1 for TKMAXX. I picked up a nice plain black Sprayaway EVENT jacket last year for £30. Perfect for dog walking duties, but also smart enough to go over a suit for work. (I'm chav scum tho as I have a few TNF things too)

NF are aiming, by their own admission, to be the Nike of outdoor wear.
Nike originally made only top quality sport shoes. They still do, but also lots of fasion tat.

The similarities are obvious.

For that reason - Berghaus.

Sadly there is a lot of truth in that.

When I want top quality gear I got for Mammutt for exactly those reasons, North is rather middle of the road now.

Tkmax had a montane event jacket for £150, down from £300, when I looked last Monday.

North Face has become the default attire of Cheshire mum in her Range Rover, much like the car she doesn't like getting the jacket muddy. I saw a whole family of North Facers at Delamere, they walked as far as the pic-nic benches and then hogged the lot, the boy was splashing too much in his new Chelsea boots so they packed up and went home. It was after that I noticed a massive change in their customer base.

You can say that about a lot of brands but fortunatley in blackpool they all wear stone island and lacostegear but some are now wearing barbour which is turning my stomach as iv had my liddesdale now for 4 years and is my staple pub coat but isnt waterproof its ok in a small downpour but then saoks me through, and jambalaya i work 80plus hours per week away from home to earn a decent coin so the wife dunt pick when i want a decent coat as it would stop her hubby from getting a "cold" : ) n love the willy wonka pik although have you ever bin out at night in blackpool?? Its an adventure in itself!!!

6ft 4" with a long back. I've got a berghaus jacket with an extra long body. My local berghaus outlet store ordered one from the factory for me. It actually goes down below the bottom which is what you need when it's peeing down.

I think tnf may pip as its a shell and you can put the included fleece inside to make a warm coat and just looked on a climbing and hiking site and apparently the old berg has gone waaaaayy downhill in the past few years as they moved manufactering to china to offer "customer savings" where as tnf are still made in usa aparrently, although the sports pursuit site is very tempting, but there has to be a reason why there are jackets half price, tnf seem to sell out left right and centre and never have old stock about.

TNF have their own outlets full of older stock. There's one on Cheshire Oaks.

Half of this thread sounds like the conversation freshers have about fashion.

Berghaus is the choice of the physical geographers i work with, and they spent half their lives outside playing in the dirt.

Berghaus did go a bit downhill for a few years, and their low end stuff still isn't much to write home about (low end North face doesn't get quite as cheap, and generally looks a bit better) but the new high end Berghaus is as good, if not better, than the equivalent north face stuff.

The top-end Berghaus stuff is basically back to being best-in-the-business stuff. Their helmet compatible hoods are generally regarded as the best you'll get out there, and the general quality and design of the Xtrem and MtnHaus stuff is right up there with the likes of Rab, Haglofs, ME, etc. Have been this |-| close to getting a Velum active shell jacket as the fit and finish are incredible, but my current Marmot shell is still going strong so can't really justify it - a properly nice jacket though.

I just saw Mitt Romney wearing North Face stuff at a press conference. Can anyone lend me a black marker pen?
