depends on what kinda food you want really.
and how central too!

japanese? itadaki zen, on kings cross road (about half a mile away from kings cross station) is very good... http://www.itadakizen.com/

inside whole foods, on kensington high st, you've got Saf, which is a vegan/raw food restaurant that seems highly rated (never been myself though). they also have a restaurant in shoreditch... http://www.safrestaurant.co.uk/

manna, in primrose hill... http://www.mannav.com/

personally, last time we were in that london, we went to pho, a vietnamese cafe/restaurant on wardour street and whilst not exclusively veggie, it was great (authentic vietnamese noodle soup)... http://www.phocafe.co.uk/

there's also mildred's in soho which looks nice, but i dunno if it actually is! here... http://www.mildreds.co.uk/

Saf and Manna are both great. Still not been to Mildreds as it's always packed and you can't book.

Vanilla Black is superb though and I had one of the best meals I've ever had there. They seem to be open on Saturdays now too - http://www.vanillablack.co.uk

ps. tibits just off Regents St is good for a quick, cheap(ish) meal - it's a veggie buffet but all the food is really nice, you pay by weight. http://www.tibits.co.uk/

Yeah the Japanese place is nice!!! But if you do want to go upmarket then saf in the wholefoods supermarket is tops! A little on the expensive side but totally worth it. Get the vegan cupcakes in the wholefood supermarket which is amazing in itself.

I'm a veggie, I very much like Masala Zone, Rasa, Mildreds of the ones listed above.

I'd avoid saf / whole foods, not very nice and rather bland food, very expensive and portions so small that you need to go for a second meal after. seriously not worth it, even for a vegan raw food nutter.

Manna is okay if you want classic 80s vegetarian restaurant done well, a bit cranks cookbook though.

If you are hungry and okay with quite spicy food the vegetarian banquet at Rasa on Charlotte St is very very good.

personally, last time we were in that london, we went to pho, a vietnamese cafe/restaurant on wardour street and whilst not exclusively veggie, it was great (authentic vietnamese noodle soup)... http://www.phocafe.co.uk/

Might depend on how serious a veggie you are - quite likely to have fish sauce as a seasoning in everything no?

joe, we asked (myself and the gf are both vegan) and they assured us there's no animal products in the veggie pho soup dishes on their menu (fish sauce is more a thai thing tbh).

and your description of mildred's pretty much backs what we suspected when we walked past (it looked/smelled very stereotypical "traditional" veggie restaurant to me!)

Diwana in Drummond St. behind Euston Stn is always my first choice. Apart from the prices, the menu hasn't changed in the 25 years i've been eating there. If you're looking for somewhere for lunch they do an awesome all you can eat buffet for 7 quid. If Diwana is full there's a few other Bhel Puri houses down Drummond St that are ok.

Failing that second fred's suggestion of Rasa. But beware, not all of them are veggie only.

flashy, you're not the first omnivore i've heard speak highly of terre a terre; it's been on my list of places to eat in for some time now. as soon as the opportunity arises to go to brighton, i'll be there!

Make sure you do, it's really very good indeed!

On that note, another omnivore veggie place recommendation -

Really nice place. Lovely food, too. (Again, sorry it's not in London, but I really can't think of anywhere good and veggie in London!)

If we're talking veggie restaurants not in London now, Joia in Milan is worth a visit - I think it does a fish menu too. Only veggie restaurant with a michelin star, and jolly good it is too, in a slightly crazy heston blumenthal kind of way.

I always liked the take away place near the rail bridge in Notting Hill, virtually opposite Bangers & Mash.

+1 for Terre a Terre.

Make a bee line for it whenever the opportunity arises, absolute favourite eatary and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. My favourite is their take on fish and chips.
