I was told steak pie as a tradition goes back to the days when most Scots didn't have an oven in their house. The filling could be made in advance and put in an ashet, and then taken to the village bakers who would cook it. This then meant the fireplace was not in use which enabled it to be cleaned out as is the tradition for the new year coming.
Of course that might all be BS, but it sounded credible to me.

I am partial to an Eccles cake or two drac but in my experience they are much less solid than black bun.
Maybe I have been eating crap Eccles cakes
