[#8294854]

I have a fancy leather Mulberry man bag for meetings and generally mincing about but I need a proper rucksack to lug around an ever increasing amount of IT equipment.

Sub £50 would be ideal.

Any suggestions/first hand experience of decent bags.

Thanks in advance.

Awaits the "If your over the age of 25 you should be carrying a briefcase" comments 🙂

OH has a Targus one, which is great. Lightweight and bombproof.

Personally I have been using an Osprey rucksack for the last few years and am very happy with it, they have a commute range but depending on the volume you require will determine if it fits your budget.

Can you not blag a corporate freebie? We seem to have the damn things thrown at us these days. I never bothered collecting the last couple they handed out.

In true STW form of recommend what you use,

I have a Wenger rucksack, they have a few depending on laptop size, I went for the smaller one as I have a smallish laptop.

See them in TK Maxx quite frequently and I think I paid about £20 for mine over 18 months ago and still looks brand new despite daily use.

an ever increasing amount of IT equipment.

Knowing what volume that takes up/size of laptop will be important for getting good advice.

Another vote for Targus here. Had mine about 10 years now and it gets used almost daily as well as being just large enough to carry stuff for an overnight (as well as a laptop). All zips, straps, stitching etc. still fine after all this time.

quick - while the sales are still on. This'll make a handy daypack for hiking too.

Or if that's a bit small, Blacks are doing the 22L version for £59...

Just checked and I have the Osprey Flare; for work travel I'd say you should make sure the access is easy and volume adjustable. the Flare or similar cover that with multi entry zips on top and slide straps to adjust volume. The Talon in the above Wiggle link is a nice pack but not really practical for quick easy IT access when travelling.

I use an Osprey Flapjack rucksack and find that it's a good balance between a technical bag and something that is acceptable to take into meetings. I broke a clip earlier in the year and Osprey sent out a replacement too. It was under or around £50 when I bought it.

I have an Arcteryx Blade which gets daily use. It has a laptop pocket plus a body large enough for waterproofs, lunch, bits and bobs and a couple of smaller organiser type pockets. Not cheap but very rugged.

I'm currently using a Dell backpack that my company gave me. Not sure if the model is still available but there are plently of similar ones for around £50.

I checked my other bags and found that the daysack I use for a laptop (15" Macbook) is a 5.11 Rush 24. Maybe overkill, but it's pretty hard wearing.

Have a look in tk maxx, they often have a selection of that type of backpack.

I know its above your budget but saw these the other day and thought they looked great. Shame they don't do a hydration pack version as it would be great for mountain biking.

I've used various models of Camelbak HAWG over the years, on the basis that it is also my MTB bag.

I use one of these, which my XPS 13 fits in perfectly (the 11.6" one):

They do bigger versions. Fairly tough fabric, padded, a few storage areas, crazy bargain. Might be a bit small for your usage.

North Face "Surge" - it doesn't look enormous but it is quite big and the space is very usable. Good for work and also for short trips as there is no problem carrying it on to a plane. I compared a number of Osprey bags and they didn't have anything like the capacity.

I've got one of these. Haven't killed it yet.

I had a Swiss Army backpack for years. I only got rid of it because I got sick of it. Now one of my kids uses it.

Nice to look at, and absolutely indestructible.

Thanks all.

I've gone for a Vulpine one (and a couple of other things 😳 ) and with an additional 10%off the bag (at least) was under budget!

Well, while I agree that prices can be well over the top, if I was carrying some expensive electronics around , possibly in situations where they might be vulnerable to theft, I might consider this:
https://www.amazon.com/Pacsafe-Intasafe-Z400-Slate-Green/dp/B00MOF6K4E?tag=pd999-20
There's a stainless steel mesh fitted into the construction of the body and strap, making it slash-proof, plus there's a locking facility built into the strap,,allowing it to be secured to rigid objects so it can't be just picked up and walked off with.

+1 for looking in your local TKMaxx they usual have Targus and other decent brands in

I have a 15" Osprey Flapjack and have no complaints (looked a bit smarter than the normal style ones IMO) but think it was £60ish
