[#11142991]

Launched: https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-se/specs/.    Pricing is good and I was keen on this with my alternate being a Samsung S10e.  With the 128gb iPhone being the same price, the decisive factor is unfortunately the tiny screen on the the SE, I can help feel a bigger screen may have been a winner.

I can see these being a lot of company phones though!

Smaller screen is kind of the point though, lots of people want that.

It’s basically an iPhone 8 but with a blazing fast A13 processor. Bargain for that, wireless charging, waterproofing, and 5+ years of updates.

Ticks all the boxes for me. Been waiting for this to replace my current SE which has been used and abused.

Also dual Sim is good, yet still no expandable storage.  Hard to decide.

Just in case you weren’t aware, the dual SIM is one physical SIM and one software SIM.

Tick!

Main reason I still use the current SE is that I much prefer the smaller form factor. The current SE is very robust compared to larger format phones.

Ah well, I was hoping the home button would disappear to make room for a bigger screen but I’ll be ordering anyway

Wish this had been available 5 months ago when I had to choose my company phone! I HATE larger phones!!! They gave me an iPhone XR in the end, and it's horrible to use cos it's so big.

Still have my old iPhone SE that's been used and abused, and battery life aside (it's woeful now, but that's more to do with Apple forcing battery intensive updates on the user than anything else!), it's still by far the best phone I've had... I disliked the 6 I had intensely because it was that bit bigger, and when I got the SE to replace that, I was so glad to be back with a 5 form factor.

Hmmmm... Just seen the dimensions. It's still bigger than ideal, but it'll fit in your hand/pocket a lot more easily than this bloody XR... I reckon I'll end up just buying one, and use the dual SIM function and just put this bloody XR back in its box and hand it back to work.

I hadn’t realised iPhones had got bigger - I’ve got a 7 that I consider the biggest phone I’d want. I’ve got the older se with work and hate it though - it’s just too small and clunky.

Due a new phone around Oct / Nov - sounds like the 2020 SE might be the one.

Been waiting for this also. Still rocking an old SE. Battery health down to 84%! Needs charging twice a day, but still think it’s a great phone!

This looks ideal. Not too big. Water resistant. Better camera. Only slight disappointment for me is no headphone jack. Otherwise, pretty spot on. Will be getting it I think

The X and 11 pro are very similar in size to the 6/7/8 models, and presumably this new SE. The XR/11(non pro) is considerably bigger. All are far bigger than the old SE of course.

but that’s more to do with Apple forcing battery intensive updates on the user than anything else!)

Not every update, others have improved things so the battery doesn’t get used so hard. But batteries age, as everyone should know, and slow up.
At least Apple continue to support their devices for around five years, there are many Android devices that never get manufacturers updates, or even Google updates, relying on customer savvy to find and install updates themselves.
And you aren’t forced to install Apple updates if you don’t want them - Apple sent out notifications, it’s up to you as to whether you choose to install them or not. I always have, since I got a 3G, never had any major issues, and I’m now using an 11 Pro Max, I couldn’t a smaller phone now, I find the screen far too fiddly to use.

Mrs K has an 11pro and I have a work 8.   The 8 - and therefore the new SE - is smaller, thinner and very much lighter.

We are principally an Apple household but I have a Samsung S8 with a cracked screen.  This would be perfect for me especially from a size perspective but the lack of screen real estate bothers me.  The Samsung S10e is the same price at 128gb, with more screen - 1 inch, expandable memory and more waterproof.  It’s a tough call tbh, the S10e is 2mm wider and 4mm taller than the SE. So not big.

I’m liking the new SE more now though.

I'm actually a bit disappointed the new SE is so big.

I would have been quite happy if they had stuck with the current SE body and just modernised the CPU and made the body waterproof.

I have an S10e and it ticks every box except battery life. It is the perfect size for a modern smartphone and the right price v specs. Pity the battery is not as good as other galaxy phones though.

My wife is a long time SE user so she will probably get the new one - waterproof is good.

The rumours had long been predicting an iPhone 8/7 sized model so no surprises there. For the last 6 months I've been weaning myself off my trusty old SE with a 7 in preparation for getting the new SE, and although the old SE is nicer in the hand I've gradually become used to the size of the 7. The clearer display (in zoomed mode) is a big help and I don't miss the headphone jack at all.

Have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed, though. I'd mainly been hoping for better battery life, but the claim is only the same life as the 8. Booo. Might still get one anyway as I need to pass one down to my son soon and the old SE's battery is shot.

Honestly, I would have paid more for this... Large phones suck!

Fortunately less of an issue for me now, than it would have been... My SE battery is down to 88%, and if I'm not near a charger, I can kill it very quickly for sure. However... When at work, I'm in my van between 3-5 hours a day, and my phone is constantly plugged in to the van as I've got Apple Play on the head unit in that. Biggest annoyance for me is I can't rely on my iPhone for strava on my Mountain Bike any more, I end up having to take my Garmin 810 along in my bag too (can't run a Garmin on the bars on my full sus, I've tried it... Fortunately I found the Garmin and it wasn't too badly scratched, but it won't stay on!), which is a minor inconvenience.

Hardware looks good but that tiddly screen and big bezels in 2020? Eek.

Thankfully, at least, Apple seems to (just about) recognise that not everyone wants a bloody tablet in their pocket at all times! I have no desire to watch 4K movies whilst I'm out and about, I have a desire for the phone to be robust (which pretty much precludes the screen going to the edges as it needs to live in a sturdy case for me), fit in my pocket easily, and to store huge amounts of music/photos/data that I need it to and sync to all my other devices easily. And whilst my eyesight is still good, I'd prefer that to be in as small a package as is possible! The current 5/Se chassis is ideal... The new one is bigger, so less than ideal, but a lot closer to ideal than the influx of huge phones on the market these days!

The SE was the zenith I think. Never had one because dual sim, shame the new one has the rounded edges. Square ones felt less like a bar of soap was about to squit out of the hand.

I like my SE, the new one looks ok but it's put on weight and got so much bigger. Also looks like it's got the slippery edges which won't be constant hand washing friendly.

@mboy I understand that not everyone wants a massive phone, but here you're getting a sub 5" screen in the footprint of a 6"+ plus one.

It could be super compact if they put the fingerprint scanner on the side/back/under the screen.

I was really hoping for a bigger battery. I’m a recent ish iPhone convert and my only gripe (actually I have another, why can’t Apple let you set default apps) is battery life. I’d happily have something this size but a bit thicker to hold a bigger battery, I don’t even care that it looks old fashioned with its (very practical) bezels and home button. The current SE is just too small for me.

My wife needs a new phone as the battery on her current SE is knackered, she’ll probably get the new SE as she wants something small again.

I actually missed the IP67 rating. The aquaphobic build of my current SE is one of only two things I don’t like.

The other being battery health.

Not cheap for a tiny screen in a big phone.

My Samsung A8 was £330 over 2 years ago and still going strong. Roughly same size as the new iPhone, but decent size screen, proper Dual SIM, waterproof 64Gb etc etc.
I spent £30 on a 200Gb card, so even factoring that in, It makes the SE look pants value.

Plus I don’t have all the infuriating Apple restrictions built in!

I think this phone will shake up the market a bit!

For my preferences everything looks good except the screen. Not the size, but the black bars at the top and bottom.
Probably still works very well indeed, just looks really dated.

I probably would have picked up one instead of my S10 if it had been out at the time.

Mrs_oab loves her SE.

Like so many, battery is dying as did the 5 battery before it.

Small, waterproof and robust is ace. The XZ1 compact did it well too, but that also has 'gone'.

Contact is up next month, she really doesn't want a big phone. Hmmm.

As a house with XZ1, XZ1 compact and SE, the whole big bezel thing just doesn't mean anything to us.

It's a priorities thing - robust, reliable and powerful comes before sleek and flash in our household.

Looks really disappointing to me - I think Apple could have done a much better job with this. The old one was dinky and light yet still powerful (for the time)... the new one seems to be 3 years out of date in terms of size/weight/screen real estate.

For the same price to the penny, a Samsung S10e appears to piss all over the new iphone SE.

Now in overthinking mode, I’ve compared all specs with the S10e.  As this (S10e/SE) is my personal and second phone, the one non issue is battery life.  I think the S10e will lose an hour to the SE in heavy daily use, but otherwise is pretty much the same size, more screen and more expandable, whilst being 95% of the speed and more waterproof.  For the same price the S10e is the better phone overall on paper.

However, I’m sitting here playing with my iPhone 8, and didn’t really have an issue until I changed to a light background which exaggerated the top/bottom bezels.

The other contender would be a Huawei Mi 9t Pro which at £400 beats both technically, except isn’t waterproof and is a little bloated at stock and is brighter - no good for the pocket of a bike jacket.

CPU is much stronger on the iPhone than the UK S10/S10+/S10e which gets the shitty Exynos chipset.

Agreed and I think for me it would be tough to go back now having had a full panel. But for people coming from older iPhones it will not be an issue.

Yet will likely only come into daily play on games / video use which is then compromised by screen size.

Haven't had an iPhone since my 5S, got rid due to to the battery being a bag of shite, looks like not much has changed then, two charges a day and still buying more?. 6" screen with 5" 'real estate'? (what a cringeworthy term btw!).

Fanbois will be fanbois. 🙂

I hope so 🤞 Tbh the only one that’s an issue is email, I use the Gmail app. It would be lovely if clicking on an email address in Safari Opened a new email in gmail, not nag me to install the Apple email app.

I'm not surprised it's the same size as the an iPhone 8, they were still selling the 8 and 8Plus as a stop gap "mid range" phone until this was launched.  They will continue to sell the 8Plus in some countries.

I think there will be a small but vocal minority disappointed that the phone isn't smaller but Apple want this to be the iPhone you buy your kids or your nan as well as for business users.  My work are currently supplying the XR for new users.

We have bought a 8Plus and 11 in my household in the last year and i have the original SE as my current work phone. We also have a 8 and 6. The 6 is now in a drawer as an emergency back up.

I much prefer typing on the 11 than on the SE, I bet I end up with the new SE when i get a new work phone.

In my view, Apple have completely missed the point of the SE. As an SE lover, I have resisted 'upgrading' to any of their more recent offering, almost exclusively because they are bigger than my SE. If I'd wanted an iphone 8 I could have had one. All they have done is release a cheaper iphone 8. When will they get it, that the SE is great because it is not great big.

As a secondary note, also, the poppy out camera lens also annoys me on non SE phones. I like to lie my phone down on a flat surface, screen side up. The protruding camera make me feel uncomfortable doing this.

I'm sticking with the original SE!

Best not to over think it I guess.

It's a tuned up 8, which was an incremental update of a 7.

You can argue it's a lot of money for an slightly old-school screen to body ratio, or you can argue it's cheap for an Apple. Apple=Expensive, always was, always will be.

Corporates all over the globe will be pleased, Androids are a nightmare for cyber security unless you employ mobile device manager which of course has a cost plus labour to manage it which will make a £400 iPhone a cheaper proposition than a £300 Samsung and end users will be please because they'll be largely left alone to do what they wish with them.
