I have just received a new Husqvarna axe, ordered from a shop through Ebay, and it has arrived with a chip in the edge.

Would you accept this or send it back?

No, send it back. You could sharpen it but judging by the size of the chip you'll have to do a fair bit of re-profiling to get it to where it should be.

Also, Husqvarna axes used to be Wetterlings seconds, so there's a chance it was rejected for being too hard/brittle which might have caused it to chip so easily when presumably dropped in transit.

Definitely send it back.

I'd just sharpen it. Too much hassle to send it back for that IMHO.

You could always email them and ask them for a partial refund.

What geoff said. In fact I'd ask for partial refund then just use it as is. It'd make me feel less bad when I put a chip in it

Not really confident I could do a decent job of getting that out, this being my first hatchet, but it is a pain to have to pay a fiver to return it.

Why are you paying to return it?

Pretty sure you have to if you go through Paypal, even though DSR say you shouldn't.

I've been through this before with them. :/

Do you know anyone with an angle grinder?

That's a really bad idea. At best I'd say he'll end up ruining the profile, at worst taking the temper out of the bit and ruining it completely. A belt sander or similar would be ok if you know what you're doing.

Yes, a touch up with a grinder is fine for something cheap and nasty if all you do it split kindling with it or something but the Husqvarna axes I know are hand forged high carbon steel with a very high rockwell. Too nice to be ruining, or indeed accepting in that condition. Even if it is just light work around the home/garden a well sharpened hatchet will be much nicer and safer to use than something crude or blunt.

Buy the best tools you can afford, look after them and they'll look after you.

Personally, I would probably just accept it. It will need a new edge sooner or later.

I think the return postage policy has changed with Ebay, I was refunded the last time I raised a dispute.
Send the seller a nice email first to see what they say?

Because that chip is going to make a huge difference with an axe face of that size ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Has worked well enough for me for the past 5 years.

Right, thanks for your input guys.

I was mainly asking as I haven't bought an axe/hatchet before, so wasn't sure if this was something to worry about or not.

As the item was bought as a present I have decided to exchange it.

The seller is being very reasonable, so that is good.
