Leeds ring road, on the other hand, is evil. (-:
is that the outer ring, the inner ring, or The Loop?
I had a idea to go around Leeds and hit the A65 somewhere after Horsforth
yeah, that would work too. Leave the M621 at J1 to get on the outer ring at B&Q, turn right under the motorway, then follow the outer ring past Rodley roundabout (roadworks!) and up to the Horsforth roundabout, then left onto the A65 from there
Or go up the east side of Leeds & pick up the outer ring at Colton/Crossgates (M1 J46 as described earlier) and follow it round anticlockwise until you hit the A65 at Horsforth
You will be fine on the M1.
Just keep your distance from the car in front and leave early.
A1 is fine too but M1 straight cruise.
Train not an option?

I've just remembered that that way does have you turning right on the wonderfully anarchic Horsforth roundabout - probably as stressful for a new driver as the motorway.
I used to live in Yeadon and still visit parents there. A1 is closest to me but, even if I was in central London, I'd still go A1. All the way up to the Otley turn off A659 through Harewood and turn left at Pool.
Much less stressful than having to even think about getting round Leeds.

Surprisingly quick too. I used to go that way when I was in Guiseley.

or off the A1 at Bramham & go through Thorner, Shadwell, Alwoodley & Bramhope
when they were working on the M62 I'd sometimes use this route to get home from Barnsley to Baildon.
So many options, not sure what to do still ๐

What's The Loop?
I was talking about the ring roads only the other day. "The only reliable tactic seems to be to drive round it faster and faster until you eventually reach escape velocity and fly off at a tangent."
I was in a similar position...first solo drive was Southampton to Leeds in a new co. Car! I tracked down my old driving instructor the week before and had an hour out on the mway. Really helpful as she taught me a system of observation and control that has served me well for many years.
Observation really is key. If you look ahead and are aware of what's around you, it's hard to go too far wrong.
