Customer just popped into my shop, I know him fairly well and know he works at local JLR dealership down the road. I joke "must be busy today"... "Tell me about it, I shouldn't really be here right now, can't be long" before going on to tell me he's just got rid of one customer who just picked up his new £185k Range Rover (the alloys on it were a £5k option over standard! It had £4k of extra Range Rover Logos on the Bonnet, sills and boot apparently!!!), and has another one coming in 20mins to come and pick up his mere £135k Range Rover (this customer, no kidding, is buying this to "one up" his wife who just spent £115k on a Range Rover herself with the same dealership only last month!)...
Now, I'm a long long way away from being the person that screams "you could buy a house for that" (even though I just did, in fact, the £185k Range Rover would pay off my mortgage and leave me with enough to buy a very nice nearly new car myself should I be inclined!), that's not the point, if you've got the money then spend it how you see fit... But seriously... The best part of £200k on a drug dealer spec Range Rover, zero ability to go offroad (at least with the 22" rims and road tyres specced) beyond a school playing field. I just don't get it! It's like the person who walks into a Trek Dealership and specs up a "Project One" Trek, still covered in Bontrager finishing kit!

When I worked in Car Finance (admittedly 10 years ago now) the very, top of the top of the range 'Proper Range Rover' was about £80k - that doesn't even get you started now! I quick look at their site back when I thought you were typing nonsense thinking "okay, LWB, okay the most powerful engine, this will show him..." and Range Rover says... "Starts from £179k".
And they say there's a growing gap between Rich and Poor in the UK!

In Tesco car park last week I watched somebody squeezing a Jag F Pace into a parking space. The ridiculous bloody contraption was so wide that she couldn't open the door. What is the point of such monster vehicles?
Admittedly, I've got a 7 seat car, but most weeks I have to move 6 people about in it at some point. And we can still open the doors in a Tesco parking space.

Sadly not mate. I had wrongly assumed that £80-90k bought you a license to look down your nose at the poor people in their ecoboxes too, but it appears you have to almost double that if you want anything on it!
Looking at the Range Rover options list is staggering. The real clincher for me though is a £172 battery conditioner... It looks like a Land Rover rebranded version of the exact same one I bought from ALDI last year for £14.99 FFS!

Hahaha, try telling that to my Dad... In 2015 he got a Merc E Class Estate on a lease, they had a couple in the spec he wanted (but in White rather than metallic) at on paper, a good deal. He put about £4k down, £360 per month for 3yrs, then just hand the car back... Or so he thought... Of course, he did nearly twice the 10k per annum mileage in 3yrs (at 12p per mile), and when he handed it back all 4 19" rims had flat spots, the brake discs and pads needed replacing all round, the car needed new tyres all round and a full service too, and he'd cracked the rear bumper and damagaed the reverse parking camera in the process...
The bill he had to pay to "hand the car back" would have bought a very nice 4yr old E class with all the bells and whistles, outright!!!
I've got a customer who leased a new Transit van 18 months ago, planned on doing 20k miles per year in it. He's now done 60k in 18 months, and his mileage is set to increase not go down soon... At 9p per mile he's looking at at least a £5k bill just to hand the van back in another 18 months time!

There has always been a gap, that's beyond question. I just struggle to understand why you would spend so much money on something so vulgar! Spending that kind of wedge on a Ferrari/Lamborghini/Porsche I can understand (aside from the fact they won't devalue like you've just driven them off a cliff by comparison), but a Range Rover...?!?!
Thats not to say cannot have both money and class, you only have to attend a Concours meeting to see the money some people spend on restoring some beautiful classic cars or the like.

And according to me, an occasional drive/passenger of an S-Max or 'Vignale' to give it, it's proper jumped up title - it's far too wide for typical NCP type car parks so you have to let any passengers out on the non-drivers side and hope there's enough room for you to get out. You can't drive down a typical town/village high street without a million proximity alarms going off or indeed pull out of a junction or reverse into a space without using it's CCTV system.
In fact it's much wider than cars thought of as being really wide - like Lambourghinis (Countach - 1890mm, Diablo 2040mm and even the current Aventador which is 'only' 2030mm.
It is a cumbersome yacht with wheels and if it wasn't for the fact the roof is pointlessly high (unless you're 8' 3") it would leave other road users agasp, wondering why someone had made a Mondeo, only a foot wider.

I passed a mark V Cortina on the M8 last week.
It was standard large family-sized car when I was a kid. My Dad had one.
It was tiny. It was literally dwarfed by the other vehicles on the road.

Clearly the money is out there, and a market for Big RR’s and such, you’ve just got to look at the Bentley Bentallegro and the Maserati Lavant (SDowns s****) and the Audi Q7&8’s ..

The C2 is indeed teeny - but it's only 4cm shorter than a Mk1 Golf, and it's 5cm wider.

I was watching a carwow video on YouTube recently and the very amiable Mat Watson (they should get him on Top Gear) was reviewing a McLaren 720S Spider.
Base cost £237K. The one supplied to them for the review had almost £100K of optional extras, taking the total cost to £330K. Crazy!

Car park spaces follow dimensions laid down around 1992! Cars were much smaller then, they didn’t have a list of safety regs long enough to fill a book the size of a modern science fantasy novel to contend with, covering front, rear and side impact protection, airbags stuffed into practically every available part of the interior structure...
An F-Pace isn’t that big a vehicle, especially compared to something like a Q7, I haven’t googled dimensions but it looks closer to a Sportage or Tucson.
Certainly a lot smaller than a VW T4 or 5...
