Looking at setting up and open fire pit in our garden. Everything ready to cook, but don't have a grill for putting the food on. Where's a good place to get one?
Anyone out there got any recommendations for cooking fish, meat, veg kebabs etc. on open fire?
get a shelf out of an old cooker, or the cast iron bits off the hob, even better. get down your local scrap yard
I'm sure you can get the bits you need in one of those self-build brick BBQ kits.
I cook on an open fire (literally) its the cast iron grate out of my open fire.
I use a heavy duty bakers cooling rack and its perfect.
you need heat not flames to cook, so either the grill needs to be a long way up (think ray mears cooking squierl ona stick, the sticks 2ft up in the air) or you need to burn something that retains it's heat and burns slowly (i.e. charcoal on a BBQ). Best way we found was to either start the fire 3+ hours before you want to cook and let it die down to embers before cooking like a normal BBQ, or just chuck some charcoal on it, BBQ, then throw some wood on to keep everyone warm for the evening.
Go down to your local canal and fish out a shopping trolley
master the art of wrapping in silver foil and putting in the ashes, generally worked for me and my parents
