Did you ever get round to paddling down the Thames??
Did you ever get round to paddling down the Thames??
Not yet 🙄 , but it's still on my ‘to do’ list (along with far too much other stuff -although I've got the trips to the Alps (with bike) and Barcelona (with wife) properly planned so that's two less things!!)
The Hermitage is near Dunkeld on the way to Pitlochry. Don't know about suicide dogs, but there's a big'ish waterfall, no barriers and sometimes jumping salmon, so maybe..
Some of those jumping salmon (and a view from the hall to the falls):
j_me - I think that's Castle Stalker (?) near Port Appin.
Canoed from Eynsham to Abingdon at the back end of summer... a really nice day out!
Darlington's rather charming town hall, complete with public art in the foreground:

j-me... I built that crannog on Loch Tay back when I was an archaeology student 😉

Was that in your own canoe or did you hire one? (if so where from?)
Just to stay on topic I lived in the shadow of these for many years (not at the same time!):

Peel Tower
j_me - yes, also known as Castle Stalker
🙂
Don't think there's a history of Canine Hari Kari at the Hermitage (or Pitlochry for that matter)

Nice build Capt.Kronos.

I thought it was a home made log splitter?
Wind turbines were last week ernie, do keep up!
No, it was religious architecture last week, and the windmill is local to Ernie, so perfectly valid in the context of this thread. Do keep up....
Not very good at noticing important details, are you?
Excellent contributions as always folks. Loving the sheer diversity of architectural styles here.
Right. Time for some inner city concrete jungle...

There were two threads on wind turbines last Friday my friend. Your thread last week was on religious architecture. There are threads on STW that do not revolve around you. Not very good at noticing those though, are you?
And some older tenements, now quite desirable residences:
Leopold Buildings, Shoreditch:
Arnold Circus and Boundary Estate, Shoreditch:
Gwynne House, Whitechapel:

Your thread last week was on religious architecture.
Yeah, and this one, which Ernie has posted on, is about local architecture. The wind turbines thread is totally irrelevant in the context of this series. I had actually posted on the turbines thread, but you don't seem to have noticed that.
You'll never outwit me, copper... 😉
I'll certainly never have the energy to try 🙂
It would be a complete waste, as you'd never ever win.
Now post a pic of some more interesting architecture, local to you, and stop messing about.
That's more like it. That's actually quite beautiful. 🙂
See? You can be nice when you try.
Not quite as impressive, but this viaduct in Limehouse is one of the oldest railway viaducts in Britain, and spans the Regents and Grand Union canals, which would've taken stuff all over the country, from the Thames.
And this is the accumulator tower next to it, what used to produce hydraulic pressure for the dockside cranes:
And there in the distance you can just see St Anne's church, a Hawksmoor special:

Erm, I think the Ape's reference to wind turbines might have been what is commonly known as "a joke".
You'll have to forgive my friend Mr Ape - he's from the East End you know......they're such simple folk.
And no, that isn't my local power station..........cheeky git 😐

This bridge might not look like much, but you've seen it's picture many, many, many times...
No you're not. You've just posted a stereotypical picture of some outdated entertainer type who you find, through your ignorance and lack of real understanding of the East End today, synonymous with your mythical imagined notion of what the place is actually like. 🙁
You might find such a character in here though, the new Brick Lane Music Hall:
The mural, next to it:
And the inside. I don't know what the ginger Chegwin is doing there though:
Izzat someone's house??! That is well cool!
Tidal Basin Pumping Station by Royal Victoria Dock:
It's an otherwise unremarkable industrial structure, yet they've jazzed it up with some bright coloured paint, making it really stand out, and be an interesting feature.

and send him back down south
Not bleedin South London I hope.........the poncey East End is where he belongs.
I'm genuinely sorry for starting to bugger up your thread with non-architectural pictures
Hahahaha
The elfinman loves posting inappropriate pictures on other people's threads
He sleeps better at night for doing so
I shall try and visit next time I am dragged down to Essex to see the outlaws. (And I saw what you changed it from).
It's here Blue Reef Cottages Going to take me a while to save up though 🙁

My place of work, as it was envisioned.
And loads of tasty looking nuns
That's not a sentence I expected to see today!
Wilton House, family seat of the Earl of Pembroke. Built on land granted to William Herbert by Henry VIII after the dissolution of the monastaries. Built on top of a 9th century abbey I believe. Most famous for the double cube room which has featured in lots of period films. Has quite a fine art collection, including a Rembrant 🙂
Italianate Church at Wilton, commissioned by the Countess of Pembroke in 1841. It does look a little out of place in the area, but it's a lovely building. Inside there are some lovely frescoes around the altar. These are lit by a timed button at the rear of the church, which makes them a nice surprise when visiting for the first time.
Don't be frightened Mathewjb; don't be frightened.
It's a great shame many Bradfordians don't appreciate what an architecturally great city they live in. Mind you, same here too I spose, and anywhere really.
Very much overlooked, often neglected and unloved, the humble brick built railway viaducts that criss-cross many cities are definitely architectural and engineering marvels, imo.
I mean, it might not look much, but the work that's gone into that, not to mention the number of bricks...
