she sent me a joke email that it cost £31, but she was serious,

You realise thats about the same price as CRC.

£4 / meter for outer
£5 / inner
£2 for 4 end caps (in the 'sale')

= £28

Just paid 3.99 for a gear cable, price looks fine to me.
Wouldn't have been better to have hidden the shop name while trying to flame them?

Shimano sp40 end caps are now 99p each. You got off lightly!

Gear outers are expensive in the LBS - standard sort of price to pay.

I think the point is you need them for 2 days time, so you don't get to moan. That's what the LBS is for (for me) - it's too late for an online purchase so you basically need it now. That's why you pay the premium.

aye. About right as I recently discovered when pricing it up at CRC for a friend.

But get the clarks stuff and you can get continuous outer, inners, ferrules and the same again for brakes for £18 including £6 delivery.

PS you can get 20m of SP41 for about £20 and shimano cables for about £2 each if you shop around.

Don't forget to factor in the price of flowers - or a bottle of wine - for your Mum 🙂

I bought SLX shifters with inner and outer cables for £36 yesterday, the link soon disappeared! And 4 of the painted inner cables for a fiver off ebay. Then again, I wouldnt buy cables at the price your mum paid for them- a good relationship with your LBS would have got them for less surely?

LOL 🙂

That's SP41. Otherwise known as XT or XTR gear outer. 😛

Gear outer @ £4 per metre = 16
2 gear wires at 2.50 each = 5
Ferruls, 65p each = 1.30
Cable caps @ 5p each = 20p

Grand total of £22.50 in the local bike store. 🙂

£31 sounds expensive to me.

No, but you might want to think about upping you marketing budget though.

"normal" maybe, but you can get cheaper

A while ago a top lbs in Edinburgh wanted 80p for a outer cable end-cap. My more local place sold me a handful for £1.

My LBS gives me free outers and end caps. In return I use them for most things. Plus doing a coffee and doughnut run for them helps.

Cables, inner and outer, should be supplied with free caps and ferrules.

The 99p Wilkos/Clarkes ones come with 2......
