Carefully selected Mogwai. It's all great but some of it is a bit uptempo/noisy for chillout purposes.

On an acoustic tip, the first Turin Brakes album The Optimist, is my relaxing album. Shame they went pretty crap after that but the first is outstanding.

I'd also recommend Kings Of Convenience - Quiet Is The New Loud

Already mentioned but Zero 7 is very good to relax to.

Also for an individual tune check out Sebastien Tellier - La Ritournelle. Lose yourself in the 7 minute version.

KLF - Chill Out. Nothing like it. Yes those were the days ๐Ÿ™‚

Still liking Orb after all these years, their new stuff is good if a little dated

Richie Hawtin - Decks EFX&909, DE9 Transitions or DE9 Closer to the Edit

Cygnus X - Collected works

especially the DE9 Transitions album, if you have a surround sound setup then the DVD version in 5.1 surround is simply awesome, mong tastic

Some genius music has been mentioned already - Global Communication, Brian Eno - but I'd add John Beltran (Ten Days of Blue) and Susumu Yokota (Sakura) to that list. Both do beautifully sparse techno.

If you're not into that, try John Martyn (Solid Air) or Nick Drake (Five Leaves Left).

Susumu Yokota (Sakura)

Oh yeah, second that. For a while, I became addicted to reading Haruki Murakami books whilst listening to Susumu Yokota - and vice versa... Nothing to do with unrequited feelings for an ex-girlfriend in Japan, honest. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Global Communication's 76:14 is one of my favourite albums of all time - always reminds me of riding the expansive (they go on forever) chalk downlands on the wilts/dorset border, which is where I heard it first. Stunning album.

Other faves: KLF's Chill Out, Biosphere's Substrata, Brian Eno's Apollo, BoC, old Warp, Helios, The Dead Texan, anything by the Stars of the Lid, Arve Henriksen's Chiaroscuro (just gorgeous, if spooky), Cat Power's cover record, anything by Gilian Welch, Miles Davis Sketches of Spain... aaaah, I'm getting relaxed just thinking about 'em.

Some great recommendations, it's difficult to know what to add ..

Harold Budd - Luxa is quite lovely (his stuff with Eno is probably some of Eno's finest work).
Woob - 1194 has to be one of the all time great ambient albums, tricky to get hold of now.
Gas
Pole
William Basinski
Monolake
Deaf Centre
Foehn
Isan
Tetsu Inoue
Pete Namlook (actually just about anything released on Fax)

Oh and some Eric Satie

Don't suppose you've got the Reload album have you? If not, you really need to check it out.

Found out yesterday one of my colleagues is signed to Rephlex. How bizarre is that!
