That was awful, how did he end up still cornering after the corner?

Cancelling the race is a bit OTT though.. do they know something we don't?

Why do we need to cancel the race?

Because the medical team are trying to save Marco, if there was another accident, they'd be overwhelmed.

because if he's dead they need to investigate and keep the scene as it is

just saw a replay, pretty horrific, from the video he's already hanging off the bike before the yellow bike hits him, like he's unconcious......did something happen before the crash?

I always think "oh that's nice" the news gives you up to the minute details, but has their family been informed before twitter and facebook?

Reggiegasket = ****er. The race definitely needed red flagging immediately.
It was fairly obvious he was dead the moment his helmet went spinning down the track. Any impact which knocks a bike helmet clean off is going to cause a huge head injury...i speak as motorbiker and someone who has dealt with many motorbike casualties.

RIP Marco.

Its one of those few moments in life that you'll always remember. Where were you when you heard the news. I haven't seen the race today, but i'm sat in bed logging on to STW while the wife reads the Sunday papers.
He has been such a huge part of the sport for so long. Although Italian, he spent so much time in the uk. The last time this happened to me was Nagai In WSB. Never good to see people die too young. Just off to read Wildfred Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum Est and have a bit of a weep. RIP Marco Melandri. You were loved by many, so therefore you lived a great life. Ciao.

oh dear, always awful to hear of tragic accidents. Certainly a character that bought something "exciting" to each race. Sorely missed Marco ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Very sad news indeed

Thankfully, I haven't seen the crash but it sounds scarily similar to the crash the Franco Uncini had back in 83 at Assen, Uncini went down and was hit by Wayne Gardener
Fortunately Uncini survived and I believe is now the rider safety rep for MotoGP
