[#12926624]

It's been forever since we've had a game.

1967 Revised Edition ruleset, Rushton's Gambit is in play, and to make it interesting I'm removing orange tokens from the game.

We'll start at South Ruislip.

No orange tokens? In that case I'll finesse a short hop to Upminster. But bear in mind there are no escalators there.

Sunday afternoon calls for wine from Hedonism Wines in Berkeley Square, so Green Park.

We’ll as it’s Sunday and diagonals are not allowed, I’m going to have to say pimlico

Upminster without escalators, hmmm. Mornington Crescent is escalator free also but I think it’s a trick so a long escalator station should counter that, Angel.

Except...

1967 Revised Edition ruleset,

Easy mistake

Apols for cross posting. I withdraw under the Merryweather clause

I thought Merryweather was first posited in '71? So technically not in accordance with the 67 revised edition anyway, but I applaud the sentiment so feel your withdrawal should be allowed.

Anyhow, Aldgate East. Who saw that coming?

I've heard of this before... Maybe on this very forum... Either that or Paddington Bear perhaps... but sorry I haven't a clue what you're on about.

Paddington? - quartered diagonal right there. Blatant! You should be in nip for that. Umpire?

The Umpire for this game is a dream compared to the match referee, a stickler for the rules. As such I’ll keep my move simple and go Piccadilly.

Who told you that you could omit half a station name?! That's definitely not in the '67 revised edition, being on first name terms with a station. Piccadilly CIRCUS thank you very much.

Bank.

Piccadilly, not my circus and clearly not one for Oxford so it's Regents Park for someone else's monkeys.

Edit obviously via Bank for an overlapping post adjustment while the 67 rules allowed for postal adjustments clearly in a digital age we can apply those rules to electronic written communication.

If Rushton’s Gambit is in play than I (somewhat gloatingly) give you; "Mark Lane" (on the Circle line) which, as I am sure you all know, was closed in 1967, but IS allowed by the 1967 Revised Edition ruleset.

Some people are playing fast and loose with the spirit, if not the letter of the concentric bylaws 😡

To those people I say 'Cockfosters'.

Cockfosters

The only next play therefore is Enfield Lock.

As this is singletrack, I'll go for Brompton Road!

but sorry I haven’t a clue what you’re on about

A full version of the rules is on its way to you, it'll look like the yellow pages, but the rules are embed in a cipher based on the 71, not the foolish 67 ruleset.

Right, now hang on (just) a minute. Brompton Road after Enfield lock is pairing after positional play. Pretty sure the 67 revised rule set mandates parlop after such a move so here goes.

Hownslow.

I think misspelling Hounslow AND treating the compass designator as an afterthought is very poor form if I'm honest.  Shocking.

Ah now, this could be contentious, but seeing as we're on the revised '67 ruleset, I'm playing Tower Hill.

Had this been under the 1940-45 wartime revision i would have, of course, played Mark Lane.

Unless we've enacted the Circle and District exemption? Sorry I'm not near my library so can't refer to the technical guidance.

There’s surely only one place available from Tower Hill and it certainly is Ongar - still very much in play in ‘67. We’re on the right line now.

It's all got a bit fractious for a Sunday evening friendly so I'm calming things down with sleepy Roding Valley.

Well Samantha just whispered that if I want to make a move I could take her up Goodge Street, so Goodge Street it is.

Nice. But since we're playing Rushton's gambit, I really have no choice. Totteridge & Whetstone.

In theory yes, but the pairing is obviously the great underground station architect Leslie William Green!  Obviously it's too late to back node at this point so play on

Play on he says, so play on we must.

Rushton’s gambit precludes Earls Court so it’s straight to Stratford.

It looks to me that you are all unaware of the latest revision as described in the 1985 publication of the Metamagical Themas. I call Finchley Central and declare myself the winner! Not bad for a first attempt!

Admittedly I'm a novice, but my reading of the post-lockdown revision surely means self-declaration of victory actually is a straight disqualification without recourse to VAR.

As I understand it the only valid move following this to avoid the Rees-Mogg Sleepy Pocket Trap would be Highgate?

Objection, I specified which ruleset we were using at the outset, you can't just make rules up. That's a totally illegal move prior to the Stovokor Convention.

Play resets to Stratford. I'm going to take Elephant & Castle (anticlockwise, of course).

Rather sneaky there Cougar. If I didn't know any better I'd think you were trying to place me in Nidd. Nevertheless, Marylebone via the replacement bus service.

Seems that I rather misconstrued Samantha's suggestion last night, and now the Oval is going to remain closed to me for a week. Only one thing for it - Seven Sisters.

I'd have gone for Shepherd's Bush in those circumstances.

There’s only one possible choice if all those stations are closed for maintenance. It has to be Russell Square.

Put bluntly I'm lost; I haven't a clue what going in, but I'm chucking out Bakerloo Line's Elephant and Castle more in desperation than hope 🤷🏼‍♂️

I fear @thepurist may have missed a clever (though admittedly risky) positional play option via the Piccadilly line to Arsenal?

Perhaps you need to take a deeper dive into the rules. The Open University run an Mornington Crescent online course led by leading gamers which gives you a proper grounding in things. They do seem to focus on the modern rules though, so some research in the library archives by yourself may be needed.

The British Library should do for this, so I'm going St. Pancras.

To be honest I think you are all wrong. I don’t think you understand the nuances of the game. Neither Samantha nor the rules of ‘67’ have any relevance here. I think once I say Gants Hill then we all know its game over.
