last year the starter motor made an awful squeal when starting up - turned out it was the dreaded DMF - had this replaced but the garage stripped and cleaned the starter motor (not replaced it)
This morning and subservient start-ups have resulted in the squealing starter motor again, can the starter motor go and result in this or is it probably the DMF again?

Starter motors can fail. But they are quite cheap and easy to swap.
Take it off and check for dust to rule out DMF.
I had DMF breakup symptoms on a transit but it turned to be a combination of a failing battery and terminal corrosion causing resistance.
Whats DMF?
DMF = Dual mass flywheel. Used to dampen the vibrataions of the diesel engine to make them smoother. Unfortunately they also fall apart and are costly to replace.
RR I'd doubt it's the DMF again, it's not long since you had it replaced and they should last a good 50k minimum and most of the time a lot more than that. I'd guess it's just the starter dying.
RR- If its the DMF again you should be covered/12months warranty on the item.
Cynical here but when they opened it up last time was it a faulty starter motor and their temporary sorted but they charged you for a 'big job' and this time it really is the DMF?
Yes I am a paranoid-type when it comes to garages!
is it not a belt 'squealing'?
Hora - when they did the DMF (i hope they did - they showed me a ****ed one) they just cleaned out the shit from the starter motor so maybe ots that coming home to roost
I might be being paranoid but if someone found a lesser fault and 'everyone' knows the DMF goes at somepoint on TDCI's...whose to say they wouldnt feel like trying it on? Especially if theres a recession on and bills to pay etc?
Me? Paranoid?
Mechanic came for a drive with me - he can hear a vibration - thinks it may be the inter-cooler pipe reverberating when the turbo kicks in under load Admits starter sounds ropey so is stripping the starter off to investigate, any evidence of the DMF problem and it will be sorted out on Tuesday.
