[Closed] MODS: Can you fix the "new page glitch" please?

[#4356548]

Is there any chance that someone could have a look at the code and fix the silly fence post error that means posts that create a new page get "lost" until someone else posts.

We've had this bug for years now.

I know it is part of the forum's "character" but it's getting a little tiresome.

Can't say I'd even noticed it

It needs two posts now on the music thread... does get annoying.

The 40th post bug? Well use to be about that. I think they tried once and didn't work, from what I gather it's buried deep in the code. I'll raise this thread.

We've had this bug for years now.
I know it is part of the forum's "character" but it's getting a little tiresome.
And 12.5% worse since the change to only 35 posts per page.

Aye i think you need three post to see it once over a certain size - can you not add bumpty glitch posts when someone does a new page to save time?
Does it show I know nothing about computers?

Really, send me "teh codez" and I'll fix it. For free.

Wild conjecture: I bet somewhere in the code it does a divide instead of a modulus. Or vice versa.

I might be wrong Graham, the tech bods will confirm or explain better.

It doesn't always happen though, does it? Are there specific conditions which need to be met?

lol.

it's where posts have been deleted from a thread but presumably somewhere they're not taken off a post count figure which is used to determine the pages or which posts appear on a page.

Are there that many posts deleted (given that only Mods can do so)? If so, it would be better if they were simply "blanked" and left in situ.

Yeah, but then we would know the 'invisible hand' had been at work.

Nah don't think it is deleted posts. The iPhone 5 has had multiple glitchy bumps and I've not been aware of any posts being deleted on it.

If i understand this right surely there is a manual solution.

post, back button, repost, then edit repost?

Don't you mean 'features'?

Got a bloke in my office that says that all the time too 😉

It's not deleted posts btw. It's when threads get to a certain size (over 3 pages?) the first post on a page doesn't show. Click the
"Latest reply from patricksingletrack" latest reply link and it doesn't move.
Another post or 2 will get things moving again.
Of course there's a manual solution, but why should there be?!

I'd also be prepared to take a look at the code if needed.

What's perhaps most annoying is that it manifests itself most in the bigger, fast moving discussion threads! (Like the rugby and ski/snowboard ones, for example). These are often the best threads here!

Hance my questioning of the "deleted posts" cause. Does discussion of skiing and snowboarding require a lot of Moderator intervention? I can only think that there might be some spam being removed?

Druidh, I think the two examples I gave are two of the finest where there's "self-moderation" from all involved. A refreshing lack of anything that needs to be modded! Not seen spam on either, either.

This post from the rugby thread deserved a wider audience, even with the terrible grammar. 🙂

The grammar (or lack of) contributes to that post IMHO.
