[Closed] Military styled cycling stuff......

Why?

Sue's new AWOL looks like Walter Mitty's fantasy bike, all matt green and stencilled graphics.
Just me who think this is a bit pathetic?

Does this military fantasist stuff genuinely appeal to the STW demographic?

Apart from sportives in the New Forest (joke, obvs), there's no correlation in my mind between violence and cycling.

Seriously, who is this stuff designed to appeal to?

I doubt 12 year old boys are the target audience.
Even they have access to images showing them the reality of war these days, not some jingoistic boy's own fantasy.

PS. Just noticed the war film thread.
Not a dig, good war films enlighten and educate, as well as entertain.

This just seems crass.

Those grey camouflage t-shirts where all the fashion rage a while ago. Similar bike stuff wouldn't appeal to me although I have some suitable gear for shooting.

I think you'll find that was the earliest example of 650b 'offering us a greater choice' Flashy.
๐Ÿ™‚

I have camo gear I use for shooting.
Why on earth I'd need it for cycling is beyond me.

Stuff like that always makes me think of ActionMan/GI Joe toys and kids playing sojjers in the woods.

Bang bang pew you're dead.

I saw a lovely Swiss Army Bike when I was on holiday over there a few months ago. It looked great, would be a great pub bike, with somewhere to keep a few rounds of ammo if it all kicks off outside the kebab house

The modern one is available to buy, but I saw an older version of it

I dislike violence, war and death and stuff. I like military styled stuff. I tend not to engage brain when deciding if I like the look of something. Shoot me.....oh hang on

8 speed Alfine on that Swiss Army Bike.
Does that include neutral?

Bit naff though, isn't it, like wearing a 'military' watch if you're not in the services?

Oh god, I've just realised I've got one of their knives....

Plus it opens cans, cuts your nails and has that thing for getting stones out of horse's hooves ๐Ÿ™‚

If I had an old Swiss military bike I'd get a huge scarf like Pike in Dads Army

They have an interesting history

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_army_bicycle

The one I saw must have been modded a bit though...didn't have XT or Maguras

Looks nice. Is understated (Compared to many blingier watches). Performs everything I want a watch to do.

Or, does it make me an evil killing machine? ๐Ÿ™‚

That's just a nice watch (although real men don't use a 60 second timer).

Unless the winder doubles as a garotte?
I know there's an occasional queue in Tisbury tea rooms, but really?

Has a 1/20 timer, too. Obviously.

And, it's certainly military styled. Very reminiscent of aircrew watches my father used to wear. Perhaps that's why I like it so much. Then again, I also wear this, which saw* some far more serious action.

[img] [/img]

*The original owner was French resistance, among other interesting things. Having dated the watch, it's around 1935/6, so there's a fair assumption he wore it in to some interesting scrapes. Every scratch on it could be from something important, something that in a little way may have changed history for the better. I cherish it, and wear it with pride in the memory of the original owner.

That's a genuine piece of history though, not a new bike designed to appeal to 21st century cyclists.

I'm just a bit saddened that war is still used to sell bikes to adults who have an understanding of the misery it creates.

Fwiw, I still have the watch my old man wore from '43-'45 along with lots of earlier bits and bobs from the winter war and the first Burma campaign.
In all honesty, I can't bring myself to wear it, it's just too personal.

Don't think it's war, per se, just imagery. Like the way kids wear Ramones or GNR T-shirts, without knowing anything of the music. It's an image, not a thing. If that makes sense at all!

It does, of course make sense, financially at least.
But do we really need to stoop so low, just to sell bicycles?
Surely we could use more positive imagery?

Bails, we know the appalling reality behind the Boy's Own myths that spurred previous generations to war.
We can see people dying on television.
We should be better than this.

Middle aged IT manager on a green bike isnt fantasizing about being a soldier and being all war like. Hes just thinking cool bike. Or hes looking at the Tanks in tank thread thinking awesome machines. Made to do killing but still awesome machines.

I think you're taking this a bit too seriously.

It's a green bike.

True.
๐Ÿ™‚

But I imagine I've given it far less thought than the marketing people at Specialized, who've spent an awful lot of cash in an attempt to sell more bicycles.

Maybe it appeals a bit more than the average IT manager cares to admit?

Ive worn camo kit in the past, British Army pattern combat trousers from the army surplus place, along with clog-soled German para boots and a bloody great mohican. Doubt anyone ever thought i was military.
Also have my Grandfathers 8th Army webbing belt in my cupboard - has 'ello 1940' written inside it. Wouldnt dream of wearing it.

Don't really know why I love camo.
Here's our latest cycling cap in Swedish M90.

Are you part of a crack commando unit that was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit?

Did you think about where the term "AWOL" comes from?

It would turn me off buying tbh, but Sue wasn't bothered I assume?

The bike offends my eyes. Why so much head tube above the top tube + cap plus spacers- looks wrong.
Why would they do that ...

Totally different IMO. Repurposing existing military stuff isn't the same as purposefully choosing a camo pattern fabric or paint job to sell stuff. Loads of my mates did the same as you in the early '90s as part of their grebo style.

Just to be clear, the bike in the OP doesn't have a camo paint job, it's just green.

I like olive green but camo is stupid. Especially if you fall off the bike in spectacular fashion and the got-away bike is subsequently disguised in the bushes. Precious time lost relocating it if ever! Not to mention the inferred tacit support of an expansive capitalistic industrial/military complex. Harumph.

It always strikes me as daft when I see cyclists wearing dark colours with **** all lights at dawn/dusk. Are they wearing camo?

Looks like it could also double up as a body bag - zip up to top & Velcro legs together & arms to torso.
