Definitely a Lancia Delta Integrale. Or even better a Lancia Stratos replica. I think the original ones are going for about a billion quid.
Clean straight Escort RS Turbo ?
1989ish MK4 . OK so not the fastest thing but it should appreciate in value and be usable on a daily basis .
If not and you are feeling flush an Escort Cosworth?
Loving the Escorts, Capris and Alfas
Hating the Austin Maxi though.....
But you really need one of these....

Falla i used to ride with just built an mk2 escort rally car with 24v cossie engine.

Likely outcome = Hedge - backwards ๐
Aah the Sierra Cosworth. Those guys were great fun. Always up for a race.
Of course, as soon as it got twisty they disappeared. See also XR3i's. None of them any match for .....
Sort the brakes out, get a decent head and carb on it, some proper wheels and tyres and that thing was uncatchable. Awesome fun.
In all seriousness if I was having a MLC I would be looking at the following.
VW Corrado VR6
VW Golf Rallee
Vw Golf GTI MK1
Mazda RX7
Williams Renault Clio
Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9
Since my XR3i blew up I have wanted to modernise one, initially with a Mondeo engine and electrics with upgraded brakes etc. But with enough money who knows what you could shoehorn in it.
An MX5 might be on the list too but I'm not sure.
Used to be a bit of a Pug nut myself, had a 205GTi 1,9 and a 309 GTi with an Mi16 conversion. Both cracking cars, but the 309 handled better.
I'd love a Delta Integrale (genuine LH drive, natch) but at that price... ๐ฏ
oh samuri that gt is brill. i had one and it was awesome. wish i still had it, mind you my spine possibly wouldn't cope.
oooh, an ex-gf had a mini like that - her dad's business was doing them up. Fast as a fast thing. We *ahem* may have attempted the quickest Pooley Bridge staff accommodation to Glenridding for work times (at 7am in morning).
The Mk2 Golf 16v was slowest, the 205 1.9 GTI next, but the mini was about 20seconds ahead...amazing thing.
*walks off speaking to himself about mis-spent youth and ex gf*
Ooo. I had a Peugeot 205 GTi. Great, great cars.
Loving some of those Alfa's too. No idea how they drive, but pretty cars.
EDIT:
For me, the 205 wasn't about out right speed, they'd rev-out in top gear !.
The beauty of the 205 was the handling, lithe, responsive, great to drive.
A car you could feel working.
Alfa +1
Just reporting in. Feeling pleased with myself. Alfa 159 has done almost a 1000 miles in 4 days of ownership and its brill. Noise and that grill is just so sexy. Not a break down in sight. Its a real adventure.....
