Where can i get merino t shirts, preferable short sleeved but also interested in long sleeved, on the cheap.

i dont really care if australian farmers have cut off the sheeps arse with no anaesthetic, any more than i have a need for "eth-eco" or "label" credentials

Ground Effect, great clothing company in NZ. Big fan of their gear as are the bike mags. Prett fast delivery too. About £24 for sleevless, £32 for the t-shirts.

finisterre are not only making great products, but they are doing it with a nice attitude - have been really helpful in the past beyond the call of duty.

how does bamboo compare to merino? i know its antibac/antismell like merino... might be worth a try for £9.75

Are the cheaper ones actually capable of being washed in a washing machine though? My icebreakers have no problems at all (even at 40), bought a cheap Craghoppers merino base layer and first wash it shrank down so much it now fits my 8-year-old niece fine.

Trekmates stuff is reasonable for the money. I have a couple of these baselayers and they are lasting well for all manner of mountain related shenanigans

The Embers stuff is very nice, but unless you are shaped like the bloke who runs the company (long back and arms like an ape) the long sleeved stuff can be a bit of an odd fit

Tried a bamboo top and didn't like it - got smelly much quicker than merino and when it got wet it took an age to dry.

Cotswolds outdoors have half price Smartwool Ts and reduced Ice breaker stuff (see extremely long linky below!)

I got a couple of the Smartwool ones. I've worn one on and off for the past fortnight and despite remaining unwashed it dosen't wiff in the slightest, (IMO). My man-made technical Ts smell like a barn full of cows' piss after just one leg of my daily commute.

My excellent, mega comfy, highly reccomended, Embers long sleeved top fits me like a glove. I must be a some sort of a bloody chimpanzee then 😉
