The whale that spouts gets harpooned

Although the whale that doesn't spout dies of suffocation.

As a reminder to keep your mouth shut and listen more: "Un hombre es dueño de sus silencios y esclavo de sus palabras"

I always liked this one from Jenn

Here you are with your arms and legs and walking around in the good sunlight. That’s winning. You’ve won, see. The rest is just gravy

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning how to dance (or ride bikes) in the rain.

I always liked one, used at work and play:

Celebrate success - don't wait to get perfect.

Also its the early bird that gets the worm, but the second mouse that gets the cheese!

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck there's still a chance it could be a merganser

This one's a bit rude.

"He's some kind of *"

This mean's he's a * of such epic proportions it's a kind we haven't encountered before.

Thou shalt not think any male over the age of 30 that plays with a child that is not their own is a paedophile. Some people are just nice.

And

Thou shalt not judge a book by its cover.
Thou shalt not judge Lethal Weapon by Danny Glover.

'Men talk of killing time, while time quietly kills them.'

This has stuck with me for some reason, it's surprisingly motivational.

Can we have that enshrined as the forum motto please? 😀

I've always like the HG Wels quote:

growing old is inevitable, growing up is a choice

which alwasy reminds me of my Uncle, who on his fifty-somethingth birthday said to me:

"when I grow up, I want to be just like Victor Meldrew"

Not my favorite but I came across this and liked it

If I had only one hour to save the world then I would spend 55 minute defining the problem and only five minutes finding the solution

A. Einstein

An idea I also came across in HHGTTG (42) which I'm re reading.

I think I read this right here on STW but anyway, I've used this a few times since:

"Without data, you're just some guy with an opinion"

[Edit - google credits this to W. Edwards Deming]

An inescapable aspect of life is loss. What is important is how we choose to deal with loss.

"The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare"

Credited to a few people but I like to think Juma Ikanga the Tanzanian Marathon runner said it. In my mind it means you can talk about how good you are and even kid yourself but on race day the winner will be the person who made sacrifices and worked hard out of the spotlight day in and day out.
Thats what it means to me anyway 🙂

Not really advice, but I love the implied guidance.

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music". Nietzsche.

Always listen out for the music...

In relation to bike/toy purchases
'it is better to seek forgiveness than ask permission'

And in more soppy moments of love and marriage
'not someone to spend the rest of your life with, but someone that you couldn't live without'

"Every night before you go to bed, ask yourself. I've just traded 24 hours of my life for what i just got. Am I happy with that trade? And if you can rest your head happy with what you got, you'll be very good at what you choose to do"

Quote from one of my daughter's basketball coaches.

Another Jenn quote
'You can try to do everything, please everyone, be all things to all people but given that most people don’t know what they want half the time anyway then what’s the point in spreading yourself thin? Focus on the small things, the things you do well; be the thing that makes you happy and leave your mind open to the possibilities that may be just beyond your reach'

Whether the glass is half empty or half full, there is still plenty of room for improvement

Nobody ever specifies what the glass if half-full of though. Polonium? GHB? Cat Sick? The Antidote? I'll decide whether I feel optimistic or pessimistic about half a glass full of this mystery substance once the results come back from the lab.

TANSTAAFL - Robert Heinlein, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

For years I didn't realise it was an acronym.

Great concept when you see the word "free" in an advert.
