I have a 65″ I could not imagine anything smaller than that.

That is some lack of imagination. You won't be able to comprehend this but my TV is 28"

Agree on curved TVs being pointless. We inherited one and I wouldn’t buy one when this one dies - they are physically deeper because of the curve, plus if you sit off centre then it’s a compromise. Just a gimmick really.

The size of your TV should be inversely proportional to the size of your room, at least it is round here.

I have a 42 yelly thhat i set 3.5m away from.  Its effing mahosive and dominates the room.  Its going on a foldaway bracket thing to lowme to fold it right out of the way.  For me thats big enough.   70 tv?  Way too big

32" here in both my sitting room and family room. Never been a fan of massive TVs as people rarely have a room big enough for them so they look daft. I see the TV as an object in the room, not a feature. My brother has a ginormous one on the wall above his mantlepiece. Not for me but he loves it.

When we have some money that we don't know what to do with I will upgrade to a 40something inch I think but I'm in no rush to do so. When playing the PS4 I do pull up a chair really close to our modest TV so maybe it's too small for that. Works for me though.

I get why people like massive TVs as it gives a great experience watching but not sure it is proportional to the cost and space they take up.

We've just moved to a 55" (Sky Glass by the way and magnificent if you are already wedded to Murdoch) up from a 49" in a large-ish 4.5m x 5m room and it is about as big as I would want to go.

Easily big enough to get a decent viewing experience even on films and the like but not so big that it is the only thing in the room. I did look at the 65" Glass but it was just too big...

I’m on a 42″ plasma! A TV peasant

Me too (Panasonic flavour). It was my present to myself when we moved in to our new house 11 years ago.

Do have a gigantic 5.1 setup though…

This I don't have and its the only thing that lets my TV down. However, our room is small enough for it not to matter too much. In fact, a replacement TV could only be 50"ish to fit.

How much different is it to vanilla sky?

Half the time I'm watching sky content via the web anyway

43" and about 3.5m from it. I think it's plenty big enough. The TV thing seems a con to me. You need a bigger TV and because it's so big you'll need the latest tech because it's too big. The last two telly's have been ordered online as when I went to a shop and asked for a 32" the salesman just gave me a funny look and tried to sell me a bigger one.

I went 70. Totally the right call. Looks MASSIVE for about 3 days and then you get used to it.

90% of time spent in the sitting room is watching TV, so a TV dominating the room really isn't a big deal for me.

I'm still on a 32", It must be 12 years old but is still working so I won't change it. I sit about 3.5 m away and it works fine.

Anything bigger than 20” is into chav territory

Can I check what year of the Twentieth Century it is again? 😀

(My 2 work monitors are 24"!)

Mine looks great, any smaller would be ridiculous. Why stare at a big blank wall with a tiny image in the centre of it?

I'm not sure if i'm disappointed that not only do i not know how big my TV is.... but i don't know what type it is either. I think i paid about £300 in Tesco 5-6 years ago... It seems to be a Samsung though 🙂

What have we learned from this thread?

TVs are more important to some people than others.

If TVs are important to you then get the biggest one that will sensibly fit in your room, preferably OLED.

If you don't really care very much, then keep on watching your old 32" TV, it'll be fine.

If you are in the latter camp, you get an extra £3000 to spend on bikes.

I've currently got a 55" which is a decent size for where it sits - next one will definitely be 65" though

Much less Tom Cruise on it.

Hehe, glad someone spotted it 😉

Nah, you've played a blinder. You missed all the horrible years of crappy LCD/LED/QLED, and lunacy of curved TV's and 3D, and can procced directedly to the nirvana of OLED.

For those of modest room size, I believe next year is bringing 42" OLEDs from LG. I also heard the worlds worst electronics company is finally admitting defeat and binning QLED in favour of OLED.

I tend to disagree, I've had a stunning picture out of LED's for the past 15 years or so. I do spend time on AV Forums looking at reccomended setiings and applying them though.

Never went down the 3d route thankfully, but the current (close to top of the range at the time) Samsung is curved and lovely to look at. There were reviews at the time saying it gave a little more depth at the correct viewing angle. Wouldn't have another (obviously they have been phased out), but don't regret it

43” here for general viewing. And a 208” projector screen for films and F1 in another room. Probably watch more TV on the PJ screen, from about 2.5m. On that basis go big!

F1 in-car footage is life size on the projector screen.

42" & 49" here - also have a projector for films but at 92" my screen is a tad smaller than TiRed's!

34" LED for me, 10 years old and still perfect. Hardly use it though so not in a hurry to go bigger.

Another 42” Panasonic plasma here, mine is 11 years old as well. Been looking at a 48” LG Oled but not sure if the picture would be any better than the panny on a normal HD signal when set up at home. By all accounts-internet advice anyway-the last plasmas made are almost as good as Oled.

Sure, but it's not OLED so I don't really know how you can bear to watch it.

I’d get 65” OLED if we had more space.

55” OLED instead. Dwarfed by the speakers alongside it. I watch movies and like the OK size, contrast, and sound. Viewing distance is probably about 3m. LG WebOS is dreadful though and ‘magic’ remote is meh.

It replaced a 55” LCD that got moved to replace a 37” LCD that broke (unrepairable) and was used for PS4.

Also, 47” LCD that still works nicely after 14 years. And though I know there is a dead vertical line of pixels on it I don’t see them most of the time.

And 27” 4K calibrated monitor for work and nerdery. Just to show it’s not all big screen stuff

32" (maybe?) Panasonic here, about 10 years old or so. Haven't replaced it for usual tree hugging anti-comsumerist reasons but look forward to getting a bigger one with proper DNLA functionality one day. Would need a new XBone as well. Not in a rush, it's taken this long to get the missus to resign herself to the fact the next one will be bigger, higher res is still being worked on.

Another Panasonic 42 plasma here. Probably about 11 years old and it won't die so I've no reason to replace. 55 inch next

43" here, just fits in the gap to one side of the chimnney breast so that's the limit. I also put it on a motorised lifter and built a cabinet with hinged lid around it so we just have a slightly unusual looking sideboard when it's not in use. Do I win an anti-chav £5?

42 3.5ish here to. It's fine, I don't really care and it's only that big because it's inherited. Wouldn't go bigger but would defo go thinner or bezel-less

It's wall mounted over a nice mid century modern teak lump and some nice plants and a 50' Anglepoise.

It's perfectly fine, sound could be improved.

Also a projector which just feels fantastic to watch in a movie type way. Seriously tempted to create a cinema in the basement. Complete with retro seats etc.

Because I haven't watched an OLED telly yet 🙂

I can't believe I'm saying this but you lot all need bigger TVs. Or knock down your houses and rebuild. You're way too far from your screens. For a 65" you want to be about 2.5m away.

If it's the C-series then that's what we've got and it's really, really good. I wasn't convinced by the whole OLED thing when I found out we needed a new telly but I was wrong. Granted it's twice the price of the equivalent LED but it's worth it.

Those charts are clearly nonsense.

At 3m UHD on a 65" is a night and day difference. Those charts say it isn't worth it, must buy bigger. Rubbish.

Dunno where you got that chart from but it is radically different from most advice, including from the makers themselves. About 1.5 x the diagonal size is a good rule of thumb for viewing distance. About half that for 4k

I sit 3-3.5m away from a 55" UHD and can easily tell the difference to 1080p

Still have a 50" Pioneer Plasma 507XD which is about 18 years old and was about the best of its time. Still a superb picture and will replace only when it packs up. The bezels are huge, so a 65" probably would not really look any bigger.
