I mean, its not like many of them look far from *ing grave anyway! I'd be saving Dignitas a job not-too-far down the line!!! Forced euthanasia!!! With firearms!!! And What's the collective noun for a group of ramblers anyway? A pension? A *!!!

You come hooning down your favourite descent to find about 30 of the *ers stood, motionless in the middle of the *ing trail! Do they move? Do they *! They Just stand there staring at you, as you come to an unsceduled stop, like a bunch of particularly docile heffers!!! Oh that's ok. I'll just wait here while you shuffle past, shall I?!!! *s!!!

Who's up for getting a petition going then? It'd save a fortune on pensions!

They'd probably complain about the smoke and litter

Large groups of ANYONE are a nightmare. I hate MTBing or road riding in large groups. And have you ever seen a group of lost Sportive riders milling round aimlessly at a junction all fiddling with Garmins? Like a bunch of bloody sheep but with less common sense. 🙄

I'm sure most drivers would consider machine gunning them as justifiable homicide.

just dont stop and scream i have no brakes i have no brakes
IME the faster you are going the quicker they scatter
As they are quite slow at walking you can usually turn round cycle past them then have another go if you failed to get a full strike

We give way to pedestrians, don't we?

of course we do but that does not mean they can stand in the middle of the BW doing nothing to get out of the way.
Like roads and many other circumstances a little bit of consideration from both sides would do wonders.

Yes, but walkers have to give way to bullets so it is their own fault if they get shot.

Noticed yesterday, all the walkers we 'met' around the bottom of Jacob's Ladder and into Edale were the most sour-faced, miserable looking bunch of red-anoraked gimps this side of the retirement home - not one smile or acknowledgement from anyone, just blank faces and bemused expressions as we said hello. Even my mate commented, and he's a walker himself!

Weds afternoon at Gisburn, At the top of the rise after Simons Swamp and waiting for MsD, heard voices coming towards me..

..Two retired types wandering UP the downhill section on the red route!
Asked them if they were aware that they were going the wrong way on a BIKE ONLY route and they said "we were slowly coming to that conclusion, yes.." Told them they would cause a bad accident and be liable for it if someone couldn't avoid them as riders would be heading down fairly fast not expecting to see people walking the other way, fortunately they both agreed and asked for directions off the trail.

Has anyone been hit due to walkers on the bike trails at Glentress etc?

They are utilising all of the available trail in order to minimise the erosion caused by their vibram soled jackboots. You should afford them the same consideration that they will show you when they try to squeeze past you riding two abreast as they drive home at 35mph back to their suburban bungalows and gated apartment communities.

Regarding mrdestructo's link, why does anybody riding a bike get classed as a cyclist? Yes he may have been on a bike but he's not someone I'd want in my "club".
I also drive a car, cycle on and off road, walk down pavements and hike. I like to think I have a well balanced attitude to all users and will move out of the way of mountain bikers if I can -they are soon gone anyway, but I would be peeved if somebody was treating a bridleway like a trail centre downhill course. But saying that, I also get annoyed when people(ramblers) stare at you with disbelief that you're riding a bike down "those rocks", and no I'm not going too fast, you are standing still. So what I'm saying is my perspective changes depending on whatever cap(or helmet) I'm wearing that day, so try not to get too upset with other users, and leave the gun at home eh?

Biners, just think of them as poor or not gifted enough to ride a bike, where they have to travel round in groups, all carrying enough provisions to feed themselves for a week should the local brewers fayre be closed, where they all dress the same, big shinny boots, gaiters, and red or blue anoraks, some even cary sticks to fend off wayward animals and cyclists they may encounter, then there is the limited speech they have, along with the usual conversation, which usually begins with "YOU KNOW THIS IS A FOOTPATH",spoken in a slow drawl, just like you may address a child.

If your lucky you may even experience the phenomenom of foot stamping, and the head turning a very strange colour of red, while they gesticulate widely, and bounce up and down.

Feel sorry for them and sympathise with them that they have many social problems we as cyclists cannot imagine, just wave them a cheery HELLO, and be on your way.

Must be a weekend / group riding thing. I ride mainly in the week and on my own. Can't say I have had a single problem yet. I am cheery to them and vica versa.

Maybe I am just lucky

Two cycling incidents in the news today!

Not sure about the anomaly with a woman reporting an assault here. Maybe the despatch officer wrote it down wrong?

When I go past ramblers who block me and stamp their feat...I stamp my back wheel....in a puddle of mud....or cow shit.....and splash it in their faces. Ahhh the joys of being an immature ****.

The Highway Code states that we have to give way to people on foot...

I was out today and in thirty miles almost everyone was nice and let me through, the least I could so was to say "thank you" and smile. Nearly gave me an aching jaw...

The only issue was one old giffer walking down some stairs next to the bridleway I was on and just stepped out in front of me and dawdled. His wife gave a nervous smile and rolled her eyes at him though. I can only assume that either his prescription was out of date or that he was a retired council official.

He had an epic combover, so I put that down as a tactical victory.

To be fair, anyone sporting such an epic combover on the trails deserves ridicule and persecution.

Nothing compares to the mum's mafia.
Big shiny prams 5 abreast, they don't move for no one.

Met some ramblers yesterday. I stopped, they stopped, we chatted then parted company. Nothing more, pretty boring really. No abuse, no guns, no bombs.
It must be because I'm such a nice guy when in the company of decent folks...

As above: Collective intelligence of any group diminishes with the number of people contained within it (cf: football). Coming up behind a large group of ramblers (even cooperative ones..."Cyclists.!!?!") is like herding sheep...

I find you get the odd grumpy one (why are you doing it if you don't enjoy it?) but mostly they're a very nice bunch, usually helpful with the gates if you can time it right too.

only time i've been significantly delayed by a large group of ramblers was descending the narrow walled section below Whinstone Lee Tor - about 30 off them - very odd people all pushing bikes up the hill - seemed to be slowing them down - yes a hand grenade would have sorted it

I wish the Highway Code stated something like "Cyclists MUST give way to pedestrians, except ones who are clearly complete bell-ends with some weird sense of entitlement or grievance who deliberately engage in games of chicken with knackered mountain-bikers slowly pottering home up the edge of a nice wide towpath after riding thirty-odd miles flat out, also he had a stupid hat and a silly beard, thanks for putting a crimp in the end of an otherwise lovely day you pompous nobber."

Walkers are 99.9% OK so long as you give them space and act nicely. 0.1% of them need pre-emptively chucking in the canal but they're very hard to spot until it's too late.

Has anyone else had teenagers on school trips in the hills shouting at you?
That's always fun. Especially when your chain snaps midway through the compulsory wheelie.

The last time I experienced this on any noticeable scale, I was climbing a forest fireroad, and there was about 7 or 8 MTBers taking up the entire width having a conversation. I literally had to drop off the fireroad, which is like 10 feet wide or something, just to get round them. I gave them a begrudged smile anyways, they carried on their conversation and failed to acknowledge my presence in any way.

I passed them again twice. Second time I smiled and once again they never acknowledged me. Third time I thought sod it, no pleasantries from me and one of them had the audacity to sarcastically shout 'Hello!' after I had passed suggesting that it's ME that's the ignorant one. Had to restrain myself from sharing a few choice words that day.

That's not the first time I've experienced this level of hostility from a bunch of meatheads on expensive bikes either. Yet I've never experienced it from Ramblers. So there's my experience to readdress the balance 🙂

Descending the rangers path a couple of weeks ago on a busy saturday and all, but one were polite and friendly. It's give and take surely, you can't expect people to dive out of your way, although it would be nice and entertaining.

The Highway Code [s]states that we have to give way to people on foot...[/s] applies to highways (although yes, cyclists should give way on bridleways too).

So, you came flying down your favourite trail, and other people made you slow down, just because they were also using the countryside? 0/10 for rant.

Final descent on a Welsh Trail Centre some years ago (can't remember which one) had to stop for an old Granny with a walking stick being helped up the track by what I took to be her middle-aged daughter with bloke in attendance. As I edged past, I mentioned that they were in danger due to it being a Mountain Bike Trail.

I got told that "It's our country and we'll walk where we like".

At that point, I sensed a Darwin Award being unpacked in readiness...

I had this at the Marin a few years back. As they were in the process of being pious knobbers, a DH hero came flying past and nearly took us all out. I think they got the point at that stage...

Surprising how sociable large groups of any sort can be if one can interrupt one's oh-so-important bicycle ride for just a minute and make some sort of attempt at communicating.

Ramblers, horse riders - even fricken cyclists. See it from both sides instead of being an arse on a bike all the time.
