Where is likely to be a good place to head for (i know head for the hills etc!!) Thinking of going up on the train to waterloo and walking but dont know the smoke that well

The flotilla along the Thames ends up near tower bridge so that wouldn't be a bad plan. Just potter east from Waterloo along the South Bank, there's always something on there.
I'm taking your other advice and leaving for Snowdon Friday morning.
