That you pay regardless of whether you get a place? As in, you apply for the ballot, pay an entry fee, which they keep even if you don't get to run it.

No

You can opt to gift the fee to them in the event you don't get in, but you don't have to

So, when you apply, do you pay a fee? Or do you only pay if your'e successful in the ballot?

Any payment is taken after the ballot has taken place

ToP tIp.

RUN the London Marathon for free. By simply doing it the day after.

If you want a time run any other quieter marathon but the main thing about London is the atmosphere.

The London marathon is technically a charity so yes your payment will be to charity.

You can choose to donate your entry fee. In return, you get a half decent training top.

Technically being the main word here I guess?

I think 'technically' it isn't a charity - it is organised by 'The London Marathon Limited' which is a company but owned by a charitable trust. Last year The London Marathon Limited made an operational profit of £4.5M which was then distributed to charities by the trust. So whilst a profit making company, it gives the profit away so might as well be thought of as a charity I guess. Even if it's a bit grubby ethically.

The chief exec is on £250K pa mind so they don't live like paupers.

Ticking the box agreeing to donate your fee also gets you a go in a second (teeny) ballot

Wife wants to do it. Seems she's been entering it the last few years and insists you have no choice but to give them your money regardless!

I wonder what she's really spending the money on...

They also organise Ride London 100 along the same principles. But Prudential are the headline sponsors.

Don't think we have many gigolos up here, but then again, I've never really enquired...

There are other ways of entering London.

1) Run a 'good for age' time at another marathon. This does genuinely mean you need to be pretty handy though.
2) Join an England Athletics affiliated running club and use one of their allocated places. My London entry this year was a grand total of £35.

As the ballot opened yesterday I decided I'd enter (as I'd been saying how I'm going to do it almost every year for the last 10 years).

Kinda hoping I get lucky and don't get a place, so I can say I tried and wear my training top with pride.
