Logging in - Link verification from StripeLink

[#13535024]

As the title says, I’ve just found myself having to log back in, with a request to update my account, and at the same time I’ve had a message on my phone with a Link verification code from some entity called StripeLink. Anyone know what this is? I’ve not had this happen before, I don’t know if the two are connected, or what StripeLink is supposed to do?

I get asked to confirm I'm not a robot when attempting to access STW when I'm on a VPN (but not when I'm off the VPN). IIRC, the verification is being done via Cloudfare, not Striplink (if that's any help to you...)

Not really, I’m used to the Cloudflare confirmation, I’ve never come across StripeLink before.

It appears to be a credit card secure payment system, so quite why I had that pop up is beyond me.

perhaps put this concern in the new forum post or report to mods or tech?   it sounds very odd but will not be seen as a separate post

I'm an older model (T550b), malicious robot and I got asked to confirm I wasn't actually a robot before accessing the website. What should I say? I feel a bit conflicted.

I’ve highlighted this. I am not fully understanding what you mean though. Did you get an sms message to your phone?

I've had this on occasion too though not for a while.

Stripelink or whatever it is have my details from logging in to another site, I think one with payment so it doesn't matter that STW wouldn't have my phone number. Their half hearted 3rd party verification system does.

I've thought about reporting it but I'm a free member so no one gives a toss and even if they did, it'd be my fault / my browser / my problem.

Stripelink comes from buying something online from a store that uses Stripe payment processing. When you pay once it automatically remembers your details, then every time you try to pay with the same email (across other sites using the same payment processing platform) you get an annoying message about "we've sent a code to your phone/ email".

You can stop it through this page:

I know cause I did it recently.

I should add that I believe the benefit is if you do submit the code etc, it remembers your payment details so you don't have to enter them again. I'm a luddite so inherently don't like the idea!

Brilliant.

"I'd have complained, but it'll only be my own fault!"

... it was my own fault.

Honestly, I’m afraid I can’t remember now; it may have been but I’m really not sure. If the same thing happens again, I’ll screenshot it for a proper record.

It happened to me too. Just popped up as I was opening stw much like the subscribe page does at times.

But I back swiped and it went away (both do) and I can continue as normal.

I’ve noticed this. I *think* it could be linked to the new Uniconsent consent popup. I can trigger the same Stripe link code text when I login from a private browser window. I’ve reported it as a possible issue with our CMP manager company. It could be related to the option to subscribe to the AdFree tier as there’s a payment gateway that uses Stripe payments connected to it. The good news is that it’s harmless. It’s security working too well. I’ll report back when I know more.

@mark If it helps I’ve been getting the texts from striplink with codes every time I just log into my “account” since May 2024

If it helps, I've never seen it.  I don't remember ever using Stripe but couldn't rule it out absolutely.
