Seems it's too easy to break the forum using these. Do we really need them or should we ask the mods to remove the capability?

bin the back tick too (in fact ban apostrophe's 😉 outright) cos usually' screws things up (edit: although it sees it doesnt any more? edit the edit: yes it does a little bit)

yeah the one that shows is an '
the one that doesn't is a ` which is on the key with all the never used symbols to the left of the 1 key, but seems it only has an effect if there are 2 backticks

hmmmm - do they work correctly inside a UL?
[list][*]List item 1[/*][*]List item 2[/*][/list]

So if you don't do that, it puts the
li items outside the post content. Very strange.
