just been re-reading this thread and wondering how OP is getting on @rockbus
me? havent touched it really since, so cant complain that i havent made much progress, ive just been practising bass really. ive picked it up from time to time, failed to get my chords and just picked up the bass instead. not really the ideal learning model 😀
but..... my mates just fixed an earthing problem i had, i feel like i should give it a bit more attention so ive been practising a bit more this week. ive found that im liking the nationalguitaracademy.com website. i thought id go back to justinguitar free course, but an email dropped into my inbox with a 'discounted discount' price for their chordmaster course, the structure looked useful so i bought it for £36 (gone back up again now).
its a good course, and if i stick with 6 string i think ill use it more than justin, its very informative and should be a good help with all types of chords if i can stick with it.
i was having a few minutes yesterday with a friend who's a decent player and going over barre chords again. she was playing them effortlessly, i was showing her how i just cant make the shape and she agreed, i just havent got the flexibility in my index finger to hold down E, B and e at the same time. that was without using the other fingers, just the index, it was impossible for me to do it so at least i know that even tho i know the theory and all the tips to play them, im not actually doing anything wrong, my finger just wont do it. so ill do other types instead, and the NGA course has good advice on stepping stone chords, power chords etc too.
i just wish i had more time, so i could practice both bass and 6 string at the same time, i now feel like its too long since i touched the bass 😀
its all good tho, both guitars are sat right next to me, so i'll just keep picking one of them up and doing something with it at least. i could probably do with getting a small practice amp for it, at present i run it through my bass amp which isnt ideal.
hows everyone else getting on?
I've got absolutely no where! Embarrassed to say I've hardly picked up the guitar I got.
Just haven't had the time to commit to it so have decided it will have to wait either until the quieter winter months or possibly even until next year when I hope to semi-retire and then pick it up as a new hobby.
Barre chords are overated. They're just open E and A slid up and down the fretboard.
1. You don't have to strum all the strings. Just play the ones you can fret.
2. Learn other shapes that move.

Etc.
And before you know it you will sound way more interesting than just chunking out barre cords.

i suppose thats what appeals about them, simple in theory so no complicated shapes to remember. shame my fingers dont seem to like them 😀

yep thats a good idea, and hopefully the bottom two strings will happen in time.

sorry, above my knowledge level at the moment. i can just about stretch to a normal C but not very quickly, need to practice chord changes at speed. the NGA course gives 'stepping stone' chords of which C's is probably what youre suggesting, a Cmaj7, but im not sure what you mean by it moving?

yeah i get you. im full of enthusiasm at the moment and wish i could spend more time learning both but sadly retirements around 3 years away. work and life just get in the way dont they 😀
i had a guitar playing mate round yesterday for a jam session, playing along to a few songs i streamed to my speakers. really enjoyed it and i had a bit of a lesson from him on 6 string which i enjoyed. even tho im an absolute beginner on 6 string, i think learning the bass definitely helps as i understand a fair bit of the theory behind the chords and it did actually invigorate me to practice a bit more on it and try and get more fluid at chord changes, and hope that my fingers will get a bit more flexible and happier to sit on the chord shapes, barre chords especially.
im happy enough with my cheapo cort for practising on, but i guess theres no harm in casting a curious eye over the ads for an upgrade at some point ![]()
i think ive learned what i like bass-wise, but i wouldnt know where to start with a nice-looking, quality 6 string for just a few hundred quid.
any suggestions?
thanks

They are chord shapes that have no open strings so just like a barre you can just move the whole shape up and down the board.
A barre chord is just a method to create a capo so open chords can be played anywhere on the board which isn't very interesting.
Or just play the low 4 strings of you "barre chord" which gives you the major minor without worrying about the high notes.
Basically i am saying don't worry about it just hit the strings and make it work. And you will sound like you know what you are doing 🙃
