I hate carrying a laptop around - small and light and long battery life if it's going in a bag. Much less likely to get broken.

Agreed

With that in mind, and also being a (slightly more mature) student myself currently, and knowing just how many computers there are in University computer rooms and libraries to use 24/7, how about one of these...

or even one or two of these...

I love my MacBook (and I have to use Mac's on my course), but I could definitely survive if I needed to with access via Uni computers only, though it would be tougher for me simply cos I live miles from uni. Much less of an issue if your daughter lives close!

Anyway... Loving all the arguments about 18yo girls needing a MacBook Air to keep up with their friends etc. You're exactly the kind of shallow people that fuel the argument that Mac's are purely a superficial purchase for people who want to look cool. I wonder also what you'd be suggesting if your own 18yo daughter was perhaps a bit tubby, or had bad dress sense, or (well the list could go on...)? Most of the 18yo girls I know at uni are a million times more concerned about how wasted they were last night, whether or not the pompous prick they fancy fancies them back, and if they've got enough vodka and fags for tonight's party... The sad fact is a whole lot of uni students don't really give a shit, mostly til their final year when it's largely too late to rescue any kind of decent grade...

Just so you know like!

And if you think you "know" your daughter... Guess again! 😉

Although most people will know their own daughter better than some bloke off the internet.

(Chat Roulette acquaintances excepted).

@timc - I'm very very surprised your keyboard wasn't replaced free of charge, did you ask (I assume you bought the MacBook in the UK and hadn't damaged the keyboard)

Bought in the Uk & Not damaged, Apparently the keyboard just bust, no sign of water damage or any other pap the 'genius' was chatting. I asked if it was covered in anyway, none, i had to cough up £160 notes.

Not impressed really, could count myself unlucky I guess...

Time machine does online backups? Windows backup doesn't.

On Windows 7 Home Premium it'll only back up to a local hard drive or removeable media. The latter is inconvenient since you have to make sure the media is present when you want to backup. The former isn't any good if the entire drive dies.
