[Closed] Laptop freezing up... ideas?

If I start up some big software it sometimes freezes up almost completely, with some coloured pixels sprinkled on the screen. The USB mouse will move the mouse pointer every few seconds, but the touchpad still works.
Doesn't respond to anything. It's a hardware fault, isn't it?
