My 15 year old son is going on a 7 week exchange to Oz over the summer. Thinking about a kindle fire to encourage him to Skype and also to read while travelling. Budget around £100. Anything better?

Hudl2 from Tesco. About the same price, lots of cool colours and unlike the Kindle isn't restricted to Amazon's limited store of aps.

Never tried a Kindle Fire but I do have a hudl2 and it's ridiculously good for the money and taking the tesco branding off takes about 5 minutes. You just install the Google now launcher and that's it.

As above, hudl2 is a no brainer. Is 99 quid at the moment.

Less 10 quid at the moment with the voucher codes on the Tesco direct website. We have one, they're great.

I've got a spare Samsung tab 3.You can have it for postage and a couple of pints. I'm in Spain so postage will be about a tenner.

if you want him to primarily read, then get him a reader - I have a kobo which I prefer to the kindle because it has an SD slot and better support for open standard files - tablets don't read so well in bright sunlight and the reader batteries last much longer

go to the gutenberg site, there is loads of classic literature available as epub files

skype can be done from internet cafes etc

Have a Hudl 1, but I've now got a Linx8 Windows 8.1 tablet. Only £100 with 1 years worth of Office 365. Very impressed with it. Seems to run any windows software.

Hudl2 if you want big screen but with less battery time and look at Asus Memo Pad 7 if you want smaller screen with long battery time. both are excellent (for the price) in all other depts. Don't know anything about kindles, wasn't on my list.

Hudl 2 would get my vote over the Kindle Fire.

Tablet would be more usable/flexible way to go

Thanks for all the replies. The Hudl2 looks popular, the only downside is the battery. I will need to find out more about the Linx8.

Regarding the battery, you could always get one of those plug-in battery extenders for about £20.

Something like this:
