Embarking on a long journey next week with our 3 and 6 year old kids - anyone have any ideas other than I spy?

Trying to put off buying some sort of DVD set-up for another year!

Anyone know any good sites for kids audio books?

making up sentences using words starting with the letters on the number plates of the cars around you.

'I went up in the attic and I found (1 thing, 2 other things, 3 things)(something beginning with A, something beginning with B,...)'

finding the numbers from 1 to 1,000,000 on the number plates.

That sounds so like my car journeys.

we have dvds and ds's but electronics can only entertain for so long and aren't real world - (but are worthwhile for a switch off)
mini punch etc - kids know the rest i don't
points for different type of vehicles just be fair
good old animal / veg / mineral can last for a long time
i went shopping and i bought....
singing songs
magnetic snakes and ladders

avoid - quote from "special" relative as we blasted along some autoroute
"its a great game - first of all someone has to step outside..."!

The one my kids like at the moment is to see who is first to spot three particular things - eg. a red car, a horse, and a tractor. Once you've got all three you've won, but only the first person to see a particular thing gets it. So if one sees a horse, the other has to see a different horse. For a crappy kids game it can actually get quite exciting, everyone waiting for different things to appear to win. Like bingo I suppose. Without dibbers and old people. And in a car.

Tractors is a great game. Whoever sees a tractor, and shouts "tractor", first gets a point. 2 points if it's a john deere, -1 point if it turns out to be a JCB or other imposter. It may be that this game only works when you live in Devon.
