quite a bit of it stuck to the base of the pan, nice and crunchy. can't shift it with tools. any pointers for me?
You need a chutney ferret. They have sharp teeth and will easily remove any residue.

Leave it in soak for over night.
boil up some rhubarb in the pan
If its a non stick pan leave it to soak in diluted Cillit Bang (or similiar)
add loads of detergent with bit of hot water and boil. quicker than soaking over night.
boil some cola in there.
Boil it with a dish-washer tablet in there. Much stronger detergent that washing up liquid.

biological washing powder/liquid,hot water,lwave to soak
Boil it with cut up cooking apples. This always worked for me in my KP days - god they were grim(e) days ๐
