But who did he beat in that time? Agree he was awesome but doesnt have any defining victories to his name. Rates behind lewis and holmes for me.

Everyone they put in front of him, until his liberal lifestyle caught up with him in Tokyo. Who of that era would you have liked to have seen him fight?

He was all those but he was also not a very good fighter. Once someone realised to hide behind the jab he was easily defeated.
He was excellent because he always delivered a KO and fans like that. However he was not a great boxer he was a great/spectacular puncher.
There is a big difference and all the great boxers would have schooled him in the difference.

Really? Not very good? And not one of of the fifty fights was against anyone who thought "maybe I should try and keep the little bloke away"? I think his style was unorthodox because, being a small heavyweight, he relied on his speed to get inside his opponent and bust them up, but I think it's harsh to say he wasn't a very good fighter. If I was a betting man, I'd bet he'd still pack a big old punch now, but time, drink and drugs have taken most of his speed.

I think Tyson would have beaten any of the heavyweights before him. Only the sheer size todays super big heavyweights would have caused him problems.

Don't think it'd make much difference, TBF - it's all speculation, obvs, but the only HW I think could trouble Tyson in his prime would be Ali in his prime, just as quick but bigger, more unorthodox and able to improvise relentlessly. The bigger ones these days would just have to try and hang on and hope, but like the man says - "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". 🙂 Someone like AJ I think has the big and the quick to be a Tyson-beater.

DId you see the speed and power of Ali in his prime?

Wasn't really known for his power, TBF.

And I also agree that the hitting and holding style is crap but such is the nature of heavyweight boxing nowadays.

It ain't quality to watch though, IMHO.

Not one of them could box well enough to do it; when he met folk who could he lost.

but I think it's harsh to say he wasn't a very good fighter
I Meant in relation to the very very best /greatest.
Clearly in his prime he was devastating.

or he came up against someone who wasn't petrified of him and could box a bit.

Well I would have like to see him fight Bowe, Lewis, holyfield. The fact he went to jail means its pure speculation to say he would have beaten them in his prime - as fact is he beat noone near that level of fighter in his entire career

but the only HW I think could trouble Tyson in his prime would be Ali in his prime,

Version one of big george destroys tyson IMO

Its one thing speculating Tyson beats any heavy in history (on the boxing forums I'm on you are not alone in this view)...but I think its going a bit far to suggest we've seen anything in AJ to suggest he is quite up to that standard ...

That's a fair shout - I'd include Tyson amongst the greatest but YMMV and all that. 🙂

It's doing a disservice to everyone Tyson fought previously to say Douglas was his first opponent "who could box a bit". Re the petrified bit, maybe the previous opponents knew about about how good Tyson was - no disrespect to Douglas because he got the job done, but he had had a hugely traumatic build-up (his mum had died) and maybe that gave him a killer reason to win, rather than going in there worrying about losing. Tyson was on the decline after Cus died, was never as good as he'd been when he had that steadying hand on the tiller.

Deffo speculation, can't argue with that. But the fact is there either wasn't anyone of their calibre, or he beat them, or they wouldn't fight him when he was in his prime.

Not a chance, IMHO - version one of Big George gets blown out of there, similarly version one of Ali would have made George look daft.

Not by any stretch suggesting he's there yet, but he's quick and he bangs pretty hard - early days yet, give him time... 🙂

Martin talked a good fight but the bookies called it. AJ needs to choose opponents carefully as whilst he can bang he's very Bruno esque in movement terms and I think Fury would easily outpoint him at the mo.

As for Tyson being limited, I don't think there's a heavyweight champion in the last 100 years who would see Tyson in his prime an easy pay day. The fact he got past a jab doesn't automatically make it a poor jab.

I'll just leave this here

Fury decked by a cruiserweight.

The win over Wlad flatters to deceive. Wlad is notoriously chinny and simply wouldn't engage with Fury. First decent punching heavyweight he fights will take him out. I think Wilder's crap but I'd put money on Wilder beating Fury.

The taller fella is always vulnerable to the overhand and that is a cracking overhand right, whatever his weight.

Tyson is limited and a fast fighter will pummel him.

The discussion was about Mike Tyson - I would be amazed if anyone, other than Tyson and God, thought he was one of the best of all time- possibly the best singing voice of any champion 😉
