All got a bit emotional for me at the end. Action Man was my favourite toy when I was a nipper and my lad has a love for his modern equivalents. Sadly I can't show the program to my boy as he may find some scenes disturbing.
Haven't watched it yet but the title reminded me of a portion of my misspent boyhood - filling the heads of action men with weedkiller and sugar, replacing the head, arranging same action men on the patio in dynamic postures, retreating, then setting fire to green plastic soldiers held out of my bedroom window, dripping the molten plastic down on to the action men's heads until they exploded ๐ฏ
Watched it last night, absolutely loved it! It was a bit disturbing when the first rocket attempt went slightly wrong and a rather eviscerated Action Man ended up looking like a green rubber chicken.
Still laughed out loud, though.
That high-power rocket motor they created was quite something, though.
When i was a nipper my mum put an advert in the local paper which said
"Wanted Action Man" needless to say she received some strange phone calls.

Just watched it, but to be a nerd, Scott Tracey was regularly flying at 15,000 miles an hour in Thunderbird one in the 1960,s, Closely followed by Thunderbird Three into Outer space.
Got to be the best programe of Christmas.
Watched it earlier & enjoyed that!
Had to laugh at the test with the 'homemade' rocket fuel, 3,2,1,FIRE!!
Nothing happening, then small puff of smoke. I thought fail! then.... ๐ฏ

My exact reaction!
Hohoho, thought I, back to the draw... SHIIIII! ๐ฏ
Definitely not something you want to screw around with in the shed!
Just watched it, really enjoyed it. Can see why my action man parachute never worked. It needed an attractive looking major to throw him out of an airplane at 13,000ft and not the bedroom window like I was doing.
Very load laugh out load moments.
Just watching this on catchup and the geek/oddball in me has noticed that the background music when they are covering the launch of the Sindy rocket then going on to theirs is from Halo. Bloody love Halo, might need to buy an xbox again.
Prodigy too
Sadly, my mum kept all my toys and dumped them on me when my parents moved house. In the loft I have suitcase full of Action Men and associated paraphanalia, most of it broken. The original Action Man has plastic hair and his hands that don't grip, they're a sort of pointy finger thing.

Indeed, and I can think of worse people to land in a bush in my back garden after being blown off course by an errant gust of wind than Maj. Hicks!

I just watched this on BBC2.What an excellent programme!
I never had an Action Man as a child so I wasn't aware of the culture of it,but I found the programme entertaining, much like that Glider one they showed the other week ๐ When they had the rocket on the test rig with the new fuel I also thought they'd got the mix wrong & wouldn't fire up,got that wrong eh? ๐ฏ .
I find Top Gear really irritating but these James May Toy story programmes make excellent viewing,he's the BBC version of Guy Martin!
finally watched it ๐ pretty good programme I thought!
I am just about in it ๐
Friends of mine did the High Altitude Balloon and Supersonic Sindy. My only contribution was to be in the background, and part of Team Sindy search party.

You know Clarkson would have been hitting on her in his usual sleazy fashion. Good old Captain Slow is way too classy for any of that.
A middle-aged BBC presenter with an interest in children's toys is probably setting off alarm bells somewhere though. ๐ฏ
CR Well maybe if he was a 70's BBC DJ! ๐ฏ
Fortunately he wasn't..
Yes, Army skydiver Major Hicks was quite a character, wasn't she? I can't find anything about her on the web but suspect she's from the same family as India Hicks.
Stalker!
Can't help but think the shy James was wasted on the lovely Major. Perhaps an episode of Speed with Guy Martin would have been a better placement for her? Love a confident woman, and she had it in spades.
Don't piss her off mind, she'd probably just cut your parachute cords........ ๐
