During a family trip to Turtle Bay, i discovered i rather like rum.

Can anyone recommend some rums and where i can buy them?

Recommended, but not by purists: 1 pint glass with 1 inch of rum. Nearly as much Vimto.Top up with hot water and take into the bath on a wet cold Sunday lunch time whilst the lunch is being cooked for you. Also works on wet cold evenings

Which Turtle Bay? There are many....

My preferred rum is Mount Gay XO. Available from good bottle shops across the UK. Their 1703 is divine, but OTT, really.

Also good is Chairman's Reserve, from St Lucia. Often available in Waitrose, conveniently.

Serving? Large tumbler. Three or four large ice cubes. Splash. Sip. Repeat.

Found Kraken too sweet, on it's own. For spiced 'rums' Bacardi Oakheart is actually very good.

Ron Zacapa from Guatemala. I think someone on here recommended it is some time back & it really is superb.
In fact I think I'll have one right now

I recently did an overnight mtb bothy trip and didn't fancy lugging a rake of beer there. Anyhoo not a spirit drinker I picked a half bottle of old navy rum . I must say I enjoyed it but wasn't sure what to mix it with. I'll need to try the mount gay .

Seriously, mixers are OK with lambs or captain Morgan, but you'll destroy a good high end drink

See above for the only acceptable serving suggestion. Unless you drink that spiced muck. Or, worse still, Bacardi.

Rum shall be dark. On ice.

The same is true of any spirit.

If you're drinking it with Coke, any old cooking whisky / rum will do. If you're drinking the nice stuff then it generally shouldn't be adulterated.

Cockspur, anything less horrible is just a 'training rum' for children.

If it doesn't taste like wood stain, it's not really rum.

I knew what was meant.

But thwre are various shades of dark, one can't have too much or two little, its all about the molasses, & oak content in the barrel.

Bundy*. Get the OP.

You can sing, dance, shout, fallover, fight all night on one bottle, and if there's any left you can run your car on it.

*Bundaberg Rum, made in Queensland.

Leftfield option - Matusalem 15yr (or the 7yr / Clasico - it's all good value). Only ever seen in Dubai duty free so I pick up a bottle for a friend when I'm passing through.

Stroh, for those who didn't know, is an Austrian 'Rum', I bought some from Graz. The Austrians I spoke to were horrified that we were just going to drink it - they consider it to be more-or-less exclusively an ingredient for baking...

This is the only rum I have tasted, only because it was free at many sailing events I raced at. I do remember vividly the colour of the sky, the wind and the motion of the yacht I was racing on after a night in the yacht club drinking this stuff.

I've never touched it since.

The Austrians in the hydraulic industry my brother in law was schmoozing to buy UK PTFE hose were knocking back a measure after a ski run to ward off the cold, that's how we were introduced to it... Yeah it's more traditional in baking though! To me that's a waste as the taste is sublime
