'prego' actually means 'youre welcome', usually used after someone has thanked you.  'per favore' would mean 'please'.

Hey Mike, sorry my useful and pretty comical list is gone. Some overzealous mod deleted it and sent the usual shitty automatic email "don't try and evade the swear filter".

Here's an idea mods - stop being so hardline and killing the flow of conversation out of some desperate need to enforce The Rules and apply a bit of discretion. There was nothing aimed at anyone in my post, and the swear filter (if I'd not used some key letters to show what word and so give context to the translation) would have made it impossible for the OP to understand them.

Oh and while you're at it, if you want to kill conversation and hurt STW traffic and revenues at a critical time, at least put your name to it so we have some right of reply/chance to report heavy handed moderation to the people who need the site to make money...... 😉

Advice from an Italian mountain biker when I was riding out there few years ago.

Any word that ends in "tion" in English replace with "zione" (tsye-o-nay) and you'll be pretty close.

@drac I'm guessing that's an attempt to mock the post questioning the mod decision. Was it you that made it? If so, can you explain your thinking (preferably a bit more than "I'm in charge" / "the rules").

If it's not you, can you enlighten me as to who it was?

Tried a variant of that when asking for the bill - it turns out to be il conto and not l’additzione.

(Note that asking for the dinner bill before 10 is likely to result in you never seeing your waiter again until midnight )

Oh and my favourite is "piacere", which is a very formal thing to say on being introduced to someone. Like one might say "charmed" or "pleased to meet you good sir". Very good for impressing people in a professional context when you know you're going to be conversing in English for the rest of the duration 😉

making note of all these little extras......  enjoyed our italian holiday so much this year that we've decided to keep going at least once a year now and learn the language.  just starting a linguaphone course with a view to emigrating there when i retire.....

In Genoa I found myself using

"Dove es il terminale traghetti passegerio?" (where is the passenger ferry terminal?) due to the main road to the docks having collapsed

"..e mezzo litro vino rosso locale por favor" (.. and a 1/2 litre of house red, literally local red, wine please)

After describing the post-bridge collapse traffic in Genoa to a Sicillian he responded with one word, which I love

"Brutalissimo" said with an Italian accent, it is a beautifully descriptive word

thats cos youre actually asking if you speak english yourself.  to a stranger you would ask "Parla inglese?" or "Lei parla inglese?" i believe.....
