Nah - best war film ever title goes to either 'Tae Guk Gi' - South Korean film about two brothers, or 'Come and See' Russian WW2 film

Mmmnn... had a few sherbets?

I give you

Cross of Iron
Das Boot
Sands of Iwo Jima
Any episode of Band of Brothers
Full Metal Jacket
MASH
Apocalypse Now

Aliens is an excellent sci-fi film but more notable for the creation of the first female action hero(ine) in Ellen Ripley. Without her there would be no Alice Parks, Lara Croft, Sarah Connor, Selene etc

I agree - dog soldiers and Kelly's heroes are both, along with Aliens, the best war films ever.

Aliens got the banter right
Kelly's heroes got the 70 psychedelic music in your head right ( even though it was set 30 years prior) and....
Dog soldiers got the 'green stuff' right.

I have had several 'sherbets' but as I am blessed with the best bits of both countries - I.e. I am English (well people's republic of Yorkshire) and live in scotchland, I am not at work tomorrow, I don't care :).

since when did Aliens become a war film? Just a holywood action/sci-fi film. Not a patch on Alien.

Iron Skies, it's a deeply factual account of real life events, as is Dead Snow

Das Boot +1
Does Starship Troopers count, that's got some big set-piece battles in it?

Interesting point, I know what you mean. What would you call it? Road movie?

What would you call it? Road movie?

Gothic horror?

I've just remembered Waterloo. French Cavalry attacking the British Squares. Cast of thousands - one take.

And both Olivier's and Kenneth Brannagh's versions of Henry V.

If Apocalypse Now qualifies as a war film on the basis of setting, then I'd like to offer Dr. Strangelove with the same logic.

Otherwise, Kelly's Heroes all the way.

I think qualification as a 'war movie' is that it needs to be set in the backdrop of a historic conflict otherwise arguably any film with 'soldiers' in it could count.

Aliens, Starship Troopers et al = SciFi.

Personally I like Platoon, A Bridge Too Far & Zulu plus Band of Brothers/Pacific. Since Saving Private Ryan (also worth consideration) there's a load of pretty decent indy films like Saints and Soldiers that are worth a watch.

Yes. Someone else who's seen it!

I recommend it to everyone. It's a little more glossy than some war films. A bit Hollywood (despite being Korean!), but what an excellent movie and fantastic storyline.

The Duelists. Not war movie as such, more a story set in war. Looks good too...
